Peter A I have just watched this film & thought it was excellent. Well written, well acted, I enjoyed every minute & it left me feeling good. Has a "Soldier Blue" early 70's vibe about it where the power of love and optimism shine through the darkness. Monte Markham is a middle aged guy who is on course for a boozy and probably depressing New Year's Eve with his pal until Sissy Spacek breezes into his life. She lights up the screen with her vitality & honesty, sometimes naïve, sometimes profound. Her songs enhance the film with their simplicity & purity. The scenes between Monte Markham and Sissy Spacek are the strongest, when they are not together on screen there is less interest. Slim Pickens only has a small part which is a shame as he usually adds plenty of character to any film. Nice little story, and I was impressed with both Sissy Spacek's acting, what a likeable character!, in it and that she wrote and sung all the songs in the movie. Anyone who likes 70's movies or even stories about socially awkward people getting together should enjoy this one.
