Frances H A good version of the autobiographical novel by James Badwin and it really makes one understand why Baldwin turned away from religion and life in the United States, owing to what life in the US was like for African Americans in the 20s and still is today, and to the hypocritical figure of religion his step father was. Ruby Dee was not given much scope in her role, but Winfield was good. He and Ving Rhames did not look anything alike or play their characters anything alike, though. Why such poor casting? Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/20 Full Review Audience Member Old school movie that had a major effect on me. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member I think the movie did the book justice, that's just my personal opinion.
