Ken Eisner Variety 05/22/2019
Monster effects for Godzy and Mothra are as cheesy as ever, while Mecha gets more hi-tech lensing. Still, helmer Masaaki Tezuka, who has made a few of these before, does an above-average job of pulling the disparate elements together. Go to Full Review

Masaaki Tezuka directed this film and the last one, and they are the best in the era. Go to Full Review

A dumb, empty popcorn movie that delivers on all of its promises, while boasting the best computer-generated effects of any Godzilla movie made up to that point. Go to Full Review

The second film of what's dubbed the "Kiryu Series"... It's not as good as the first one. Go to Full Review

This modern series is one that's improving with each entry, and all of them are big ol' heaps of rubber suit glee. Go to Full Review

Daniel V 03/23/2023 I love having Godzilla back on the silver screen in one of his best films along with Mothra and MechaGodzilla. See more emorym 03/23/2023 Great Godzilla movie See more Ranen 03/23/2023 I really enjoyed this movie! It solidified the idea of “humans are the real monsters” that the whole series tells. The action and effects were awesome, especially for 2003! See more Khaliel P Nov 1 Godzilla: Tokyo SOS stands out as a rare direct sequel in the Millennium era, following the events of Godzilla X MechaGodzilla with surprising continuity. The story explores the moral and spiritual consequences of using the original Godzilla’s skeleton to build MechaGodzilla, as Mothra warns humanity to let the creature rest in peace or lose her protection. While the human characters are shallow and underdeveloped, the film excels in its spectacular kaiju sequences, featuring stunning special effects, fluid monster designs, and beautifully crafted CGI. Godzilla’s return is given a meaningful motive, Mothra plays a strong moral role, and MechaGodzilla comes back upgraded and fierce. Despite a few editing flaws, Tokyo SOS delivers an impressive, emotionally resonant continuation in a franchise usually dominated by reboots. See more Laura B Jun 8 While lacking in the story department, the film more than makes up for it with its spectacular special effects that rival effects even from today. See more Justin T 09/03/2024 This has a pretty slow start but it’s nice to have a Godzilla film following on directly from the previous film as that hasn’t happened for a while. This has the same serious tone of the previous film. It is a direct sequel to Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) which was a re-sequel to Godzilla (1954) but it is also a sequel to Mothra (1961) and Space Amoeba (1970), well kind of anyway. This is a complicated timeline. It was great having Mothra back in a Godzilla movie and Mothra looks the best so far. Also thankfully the twin Shobijin/Elias return with Mothra. The special effects are also looking good, especially on the twins. Even their song is the best it has ever sounded! Overall this film is not as entertaining as the previous one and it is basically just more of the same but with a slower pace. Still the kaiju action is fantastic. See more Read all reviews
