Critics Consensus

Gold boasts an impressively committed performance from Matthew McConaughey, but it's just one glittering nugget in an otherwise uneven heap of cinematic silt.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader [Matthew McConaughey's] scenes in the jungle with dashing geologist Edgar Ramírez are much duller than those in the movie's latter half. Mar 26, 2020 Full Review Michael Sragow Film Comment Magazine Gaghan never catches you up in Wells's gold-fever dream, so the movie, like his plan, falls apart. His attempt to impose a mock-heroic template on the material, doesn't fit. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Gary M. Kramer Salon.com Despite McConaughey's commitment to the role, his Kenny is more pathetic than sympathetic, which makes caring about him for two hours a difficult task. Mar 3, 2017 Full Review Matt Neglia Next Best Picture A movie that is completely hollow and only saved by Matthew McConaughey's committed performance. Rated: 3/10 Jun 24, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review It's a dark comedy, a satire of capitalism gone wrong, a critique of corporate greed, and a human drama about a loser who thought he finally made it big. And moreover, the film does none of these modes well. Rated: 1.5/4 Apr 5, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy The maxim states that all that glitters is not gold, and that's certainly true. In the case of Gold, it's more like a shattered disco ball, promising dazzlement but delivering only a few fleeting glints of illumination. Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 17, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Georgan G Despite flaws, I enjoyed watching this dramatization of a bunch of greedy jerks. Don't believe the ending, but the plot otherwise shows capitalists to be the idiotic bad guys they are. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/14/24 Full Review Julie A Having watched gold hunters online many times, this movie portrays the feelings of all concerned in that roller coaster of a life style, to perfection. Based on a true story, there are enough twists and turns to keep you glued to the screen to the very end. On DVD the deleted scenes are listed - wish they had left them in. Good script, sharp editing, great acting, terrific story. Thank you one and all. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/29/24 Full Review Bumbling K Beautiful depiction of a true story. Gripping till the end. Just because it takes a dig at Zs of New York, biased critics are throwing a hissy fit. Good movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/01/24 Full Review Lorry S It's worth watching if you like Matthew and you have adventure for Gold. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Ilson Simão S Achei um filme bom, não é genial mas pra quem gosta desse tipo de filme vale a pena, não entendi tantas notas baixas Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review Susan A I thought it was an excellent movie. I am shocked that it has such a low rating. My friend and I loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/09/23 Full Review Read all reviews
