Youth, comes with angst, unwillingness, irresponsibility. And here is a woman, explicitly reclusive and working each word in some tension, each perfectly intended - and they bond through the only vessel of venting they can bare - words, inane notes. The contrast of a red marker and the ballpoint pen interconnecting. When potential becomes merely a possibility, and you need fire billowing from the right leak rather than the exits you're too comfortable denying. + Zadie Smith talks like music. See more Michelle G 08/25/2024 I really love Emily Mortimer's work, so I really wanted to like this film, but, I have trouble when the main character, in this case, Lillian, isn't at all likeable. Add that there was only 10 minutes left and still no redemption had occurred, which meant that what did take place at the end made little sense and didn't gel with all that had gone before it. The contrast and interaction between the Lillian and Julia characters, in my mind, needed a little more emphasis to make this film shine more as "Julia" carries the gravitas that would have bumped this up to a 3.5 or 4 star. See more 08/30/2020 Frustrated B, C, D and E plots give birth to a beautifully rounded A plot which reconciles multiple character arcs and then moves on - kinda what would happen if a writer locked themselves away and that chrysalis... oh, right I get it... Dolly Wells' previous work is some sort of pointer to this: she's great and it's great. Yes, they're the indulged meeja creative types in Brooklyn making art about themselves but they don't pretend they aren't, so you can't really throw things at the screen, the privileged oafs. Wonderful soundtrack too, as you'd expect from Wells and Emily Mortimer, which you'd also expect. Zadie Smith's in it and offers the chrysalis metaphor, which is nice. See more Read all reviews
