Upset about moving from the big city to a small town, young Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets his beautiful neighbor Hannah (Odeya Rush). The teen is surprised to learn that Hannah's mysterious father is R.L. Stine (Jack Black), the famous author of the best-selling "Goosebumps" series. When Zach accidentally unleashes the monsters from the fantastic tales, it's up to Stine, his daughter and Cooper to return the beasts back to the books where they belong.

An amusing, if overstuffed adaptation of classic R.L. Stine tales. As the children's author, Black is solid and so is the FX, though the shrieking best friend performance by Ryan Lee quickly becomes grating and Hannah's resolution is wonky at best.

As a six-year-old kid in 1998, I would have found "Goosebumps" to be an exciting cinematic adventure. As a grown-up(?) in 2025, I notice too many flaws in the generic story. Jack Black is extremely annoying, and Dylan Minnette is a very bad actor. Casting these two prominently hurts the film. At some point, I mentally checked out, too. The garden gnomes were really great, though.

It doesn’t compare to the original series in my opinion, mainly because of this being an entire movie instead of a 20 minute episode. However, the Goosebumps movie introduces a fresh, competent, much needed facelift to the Goosebumps franchise. The old series definitely shows its age consistently throughout its runtime, and this remake will ensure the next generation has the ability to enjoy R.L. Stein’s work as much as my generation did growing up.
