[A] sickening, lush mystery about two female corpses, each partly a severed human and partly a mannequin. Go to Full Review

Mostly, Guilty of Romance seems content allowing characters to verbally abuse each other before eventually reaching the inevitable conclusion that life is a burden and all love is illusory. Go to Full Review

Though it begins with the aesthetic and conceptual rigor of Blade Runner, it quickly veers toward the gratuitous outlandishness of a Bruce La Bruce film. Go to Full Review

Too serious for entertainment yet too bizarre to be taken too seriously, "Guilty of Romance" would be a drag to watch if not for the truly stellar acting by its two eye-catching female leads. Go to Full Review

Sion Sono has something of a cult following, however if Guilty of Romance is a viewer's first experience of him, s/he could be forgiven for pondering exactly why this is. Go to Full Review

ill 3 Nov 2 What's incredible about this trilogy is that Sion Sono manages to captivate the viewer without resorting to gratuitous gore. His films are highly exaggerated, rich in nuance and symbolism, but they succeed wonderfully in offering an experience that is at once disturbing, philosophical, and thrilling, something very few films manage to do. This trilogy is truly unmissable and may make most of the movies you'll see after feel flat. See more acsdoug D @acsdoug 07/09/2023 The film has a couple of problems. It's too long for one thing and overuses analogies to enhance the story (the poem is more annoying than insightful, you'll see what I mean). Still, it's weird and unusual in a good way, I liked it. See more 01/09/2019 After watching this movie and reading every review about it that I can find, I'm still not sure what to make about this film. On the surface its very easy to understand: women find their power from sex... meaning they have the power to choose who they sleep with and how that event transpires. So a bored housewife descends into "hell" by choice, by cheating on her husband and eventually becoming a prostitute. This sounds pretty misogynistic, but I know full well that Sono is making the opposite point. Hence I don't know how to get from point a to point b. And every review fails to even attempt to give an understanding of what transpired. Heck, I'm still not totally sure what the murder investigation(s) had to do with the above. This is obviously begging for a repeat viewing, but I'm scared I'll be no closer to an explanation of the layered meaning of this movie. It's both frustrating and amazing. Part of the reason I struggled with the meaning was because of Megumi Kagarazaka... holy shit is she ever beautiful. She's so gorgeous that she's actually a distraction! No lie. I will watch every movie she's ever been in. I can't get enough of her. See more 09/24/2015 Megumi Kagurazaka gives a great performance. Actually, all of the female leads give powerful performances. Crazy movie. Sion Sono continues to impress me as I go through the parts of his filmography I can find. I've said this before, but I really get a big Brian De Palma vibe from Sono's sexual thrillers. See more 05/13/2015 Lacking a balance, the film is saturated with sex scenes and just minor gore. The acting is explosive and disturbing, sordid themes and a mistery that keeps the flow going until the very last moments of the film, although it won't leave much to think about after its end.
