Visually, "Harbin" is often stunning. Woo Min-ho often is painterly in how he re-creates the early 20 century. Along with cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo ("Parasite," "Snowpiercer"), he uses the screen as a canvas for some absolutely ravishing images.

Harbin gives a suspenseful depiction of the 1909 plot by Korean fighters to assassinate Japanese prime minister Itō Hirobumi during Japan’s takeover of Korea. The movie drags in the middle, but is overall a well-made historical drama.

The Harbin movie cannot be a five-star movie for everyone, but I think Koreans should definitely watch it and remember the hard work of many people who fought for independence in history and their names.

The lighting and camera work was excellent. I like historical drama but shy away from war movies. There were bloody scenes but I didn't find any of the fight scenes necessarily gory. Kudos, of course, to the big names and all the actors were stellar.

This film was incredible! Gripping, emotional, and eye opening. I had no idea of this specific portion of the Korean/Japanese history. This was a truly informational as well as emotionally and mentally engaging. Definitely recommend. Very well executed and the character work here is great!

At the very end it says something along the lines of “in 1946 Korea resistance army kept fighting and they finally won independence” and the end roll credits. Maybe give a tiny nod to who actually won your independence?
