Not once throughout the film do the environs, sets or costuming immerse the viewer in the appropriate period, because the film's cinematography makes it all feel like a civil war cosplay captured on a cell phone. Bass Reeves deserves a better movie.

This is a really, really low budget Western, but it is not terrible. There are some good elements of it and some good actors and action. The Direction and Cinematography are poor and low quality. The costumes and script are decent. It is a Western, taking place in Arkansas in the years after the Civil War in the United States. It is the story of an extraordinary gun man, who happens to be black. Circumstances have him appointed an official law man. One of the strengths of the movie is Frank Grillo. I always write that regardless of what a movie offers you can always count on Frank Grillo to deliver. This one is no exception. If you like Westerns this is worth checking out with managed expectations.

In the 21st century you would think Americans would have gotten their s**t together enough by now to be able to depict an accurate portray of their own countries history but sadly,no,race still appears to be an issue with a white minority that would bring back slavery if they could. In reality in the old west 20-30% of cowboys were black!

This movie is deeply flawed. It can be made enjoyable by setting out to pick all the mistakes like snap fasteners on Ron Perlman's coat in a period before they were invented. It is a shame more effort could not have been put into the production
