Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald It’s all too much. The horrors are piled on in such quantities that any possibility of being scared or even slightly repulsed soon evaporates. Rated: 2/5 Oct 11, 2024 Full Review William Bibbiani TheWrap Taylor envisions a Hellboy where the horror matters more than the humor or poetry or romance or even the good vibes, and he’s made a film that proves his take is valid. Oct 10, 2024 Full Review Siddhant Adlakha Variety It has the look of YouTube fan film — not to mention the excess fidelity. Oct 9, 2024 Full Review Alistair Lawrence Common Sense Media But whereas previous Hellboy movie outings have been colorful, boisterous affairs, Hellboy: The Crooked Man never rises above being a dimly lit, bargain-basement offering. Nov 4, 2024 Full Review Aaron Neuwirth We Live Entertainment When committed to the horror component, the film works well enough. Still, the time between “scares,” let alone the minimal amount of action, leaves much to be desired. Rated: 4/10 Nov 1, 2024 Full Review Austin Burke Austin Burke/Flick Fan Nation While the attempt at building a mysterious and creepy atmosphere around Hellboy is admirable, the execution is lackluster across the board. The editing is clunky, the interactions are awkward, and the pacing is too slow to get any momentum going. Rated: 4/10 Oct 28, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

H C An absolutely beautiful loveletter to the original comic of The Crooked Man. People who ridicule the pacing, etc don't realize that this is really made by and for the people who love the comic, as it's an almost moment-by-moment retelling of it. The faithfulness of the storytelling is one of my favorite aspects. Even the invented side character of Bobbie Joe is fascinating and so similar to some other comics-only Hellboy characters that I actually had to stop and check that she wasn't one of them. I fully went into this expecting an underwhelming cash-grab disaster, but what I found was a lovingly crafted piece of Hellboy gold. The tone could not be more faithful to that of the comics, even more than the Perlman adaptations so beloved by HB fans. Love love love this movie and will be loving/watching it for years to come. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review Presten S. P This film was surprisingly not bad, considering the disaster that was the previous Hellboy movie. I kind of enjoyed that they went more B-rate horror than comedy (although Hellbou does get in one or two zingers), and I honestly thought this film had a very decent creep factor - the Crooked Man is a very decent villain. It’s not going to win an Oscar, but I did mildly enjoy it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/10/24 Full Review Mathew T This is a terrible movie. No fun, no humor, no monsters. Just a lot of shrieking and noise. Nothing is scary or interesting. I could barely watch it. Kept hoping it would get better, but it never did. Hellboy kills the Crooked Man with his gun. Enough said. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Audience Member I tried to give it a chance. Turned it off after the hillbillies recognized hellboy from the cover of a magazine. The trailer made it look more exciting then it was. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/08/24 Full Review Audience Member We watch superhero movies to see the superheroes kicking butts, not superheroes having their butts kicked. This movie is about superheroes having their butts kicked almost the entire movie. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/07/24 Full Review Seth S Hellboy: The Crooked Man ended up being a lot trickier to review than I thought. I thought within the first 5 minutes that I had wasted the $1.99 on the rental, but once I settled into what the vibe of this movie was going to be for the remaining hour and thirty minutes I can definitely say that I’m glad I saw it. Mind, I’m not saying that this was nearly as good as I’d hoped it would be or even as good as it thinks it is. It’s sloppy, the editing is jumbled, and the script needed a few rewrites. But that’s where this is kind of a case of two movies: the movie that it wants to be and the movie that it is. I could easily see this being a lot better if they had just given script more time to cook, but unfortunately this thing just ends up being a mess that can be legitimately hard to follow at times. But what this movie makes up for in its lacking script is its atmosphere. This movie works best when it is forced to be a small budget horror movie. Once it settles into a confined location it can be legitimately creepy and there were moments where i found myself getting chills and pretty creeped out, and I would say that’s easily this movie’s biggest strength: it’s atmosphere. This movie had the budget of a half eaten sandwich and a bag of Cheetos, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This movie works best when it’s restrained, when it has to rely on the vibes and atmosphere to get under your skin, and for the most part it’s pretty effective. Granted, there are some times when they go for a CG approach that they clearly didn’t have the budget for, but for the most part the special effects are practical, for better or worse. There were times where the Hellboy suit is clearly just that: a suit, and you can spot the fabric folding whenever Jack Kelsey (Hellboy) bends over or leans too far over to a side. I’m not sure if this is something anyone else is going to notice, but as someone who looks for this kind of stuff I couldn’t help but notice it. But overall, I found that the practical approach was in this movie’s favor and it added to the overall unique look of the film and that’s going to be what I remember most about this movie. Overall, did I want more? Yes. Am I happy with what I got? Reasonably? Would I recommend this to just anybody? Well, I don’t think this is going to be for just anybody. I wouldn’t recommend this to someone who needs their Hellboy fix after the Del Toro movies or whatever the hell that 2019 reboot was. But, if you’re a fan of low budget experimental arthouse horror films then I would definitely say it’s worth a watch because that’s exactly how I would classify this movie. It’s got the creep factor, the other worldly atmosphere, and some ideas up it’s sleeve that I think make for an interesting watch. Not perfect, but interesting enough for a recommend.
