Critics Consensus

Hello, My Name Is Doris is immeasurably elevated by Sally Field's remarkable performance in the title role, which overpowers a surfeit of stereotypical indie quirk.

Doris may be a bit clueless, but the movie doesn't deny [Sally] Field her sexuality. Go to Full Review

Showalter navigating things in such a way that he's able to pay off early jokes in a way that feels cathartic and genuine, yet is still humorous, while also allowing for an aura of jovial possibility that's positively joyous. Go to Full Review

A sharp dramedy focusing on the romantic stirrings of a lonely office worker, played with considerable wit and verve by the 69-year-old Sally Field. Go to Full Review

Hello, My Name is Doris offers awkward humor that will be panic-inducing for some audiences, but it's simultaneously very funny, heartfelt and in the end will make you smile. Go to Full Review

Drew B Jan 7 I have been obsessed with this movie for years. "Awkwardly endearing" is the best way to describe it. Funny, cute, uncomfortable. We see this character learn and grow along the way, even in her ripe older age. Sally Field pulls off a stunning performance that really brings this wacky, magnificent character together. See more David F Dec 23 This is a bit of a failure of a film. Sally Field is woefully miscast as a 68 year-old data entry clerk who falls in love with 35 year-old art director Max Greenfield. Unfortunately this isn't entirely Field's fault; the script renders her character unlikeable and stalkerish rather than quirky and charming. Field herself is not only a good actress, but also a rare beauty, and putting her in a funny wig and glasses make her a caricature rather than a character. The constantly-smiling Greenfield looks like a refugee from a Hallmark Christmas film and never convinces. See more Jeff M 01/26/2024 Rough beginning, unsatisfying ending, but good middle section. Sally Field has some nice moments with Max Greenfield. It was insulting to all older women that assumes a 20something is what we seek. This was a bad mix of comedy in poor taste (laughing at the older woman) and having no support for what she had gone through in life. See more joshua k 08/02/2022 This movie is exactly where movies should be going; unique, funny, and artistic. Sally Field did an amazing job capsulising the crazy cat woman with a charming sexual desire living in a mainstream world. See more Read all reviews
