Joseph D @JosephJDL May 10 I love this movie with Sally Field. As Doris, she’s lived most of her life at home taking care of her mom. We find Doris in the later years of her life trying to figure things out. It’s a very relatable movie to anyone who has ever felt out of place or their dreams and reality aren’t lining up. It’s definitely a "feel good" movie. 😀🍿 See more Jonathan F @RT16134280 Mar 19 The screenplay's lead character of Doris, played by Sally Field, is so poorly drawn by screenwriter Laura Terruso and awkwardly presented by director Michael Showalter that this mislabeled 'rom-com' is no more than a sequence of forgettable fantasy sketches. The various scenes bear little coherent structure or narrative. Maybe the script was just tossed out the window by so many producers prior to being funded. There lacks any actual impetus for the character to be motivated and the film gives us no reason to feel sympathy for her. The other barely visible stereotyped characters that populate the background here must have emerged from an old receipt printer whose thermal paper was years out of date. A single star rating is for Sally Field's acting ability, otherwise this film deserves none. See more Drew B @RT87397005 01/07/2025 I have been obsessed with this movie for years. "Awkwardly endearing" is the best way to describe it. Funny, cute, uncomfortable. We see this character learn and grow along the way, even in her ripe older age. Sally Field is woefully miscast as a 68 year-old data entry clerk who falls in love with 35 year-old art director Max Greenfield. Unfortunately this isn't entirely Field's fault; the script renders her character unlikeable and stalkerish rather than quirky and charming. Field herself is not only a good actress, but also a rare beauty, and putting her in a funny wig and glasses make her a caricature rather than a character. The constantly-smiling Greenfield looks like a refugee from a Hallmark Christmas film and never convinces.
