Peter Bradshaw Guardian Hidden City has a distinct sense of humour, made with authorial confidence and style. desmond d Some interesting elements and talent deployed, but the film displays the understanding of a highly educated 12 year old who has never left the house and was born in 1910 in the way it conceives of its characters, their lives, the way they interact and talk, and how basic everyday business and adminstrative tasks were carried out in the mid 1980s. Unfortunately, this makes the film completely unbelievable, and I am not referring to the wild conspiracy theory which appears to be a distant central plot point that may eventually be arrived at. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/08/24 Full Review Robert L Stephen Poliakoff's often forgotten mystery about forgotten secrets is a stylish as it is quirky, with some standout cameos from the likes of Richard E. Grant and Alex Norton. The plot is somewhat contrived, but zips along quite nicely and everyone does a fair turn. Although Cassie Stuart's performance borderlines on annoying rather than interesting. Charles Dance is fantastic as the somewhat mercurial maths genius forced out of his comfort zone by the situation and his transition from vague indifference to renewed interest in the world seems somewhat believable. The ending even hints at a sequel that was to never come, perhaps for the best. A movie pre-internet that could never work now. A snapshot of the excess of 80's capitalism dressed up as "art". Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Long drawn out story in great need of editing and a reason to care about any of the characters on screen or in the secret films. The only reason to see it is to see a young sexy Charles Dance. Poor Poliakoff who just can't quite make it into Jed Mercurio's league of thrillers, no matter how much money the BBC throws at him.
