Serial divorcée Hilda Crane (Jean Simmons) returns to the town where she went to college and begins a new romance with her old flame Russell Burns (Guy Madison), much to the chagrin of his abusive mother, Mrs. Burns (Evelyn Varden). When Mrs. Burns dies of a heart attack, her death casts a long shadow over their relationship.
