Critics Consensus

Unlike the overproduced and overbudgeted Hollywood blockbusters, Himalaya is a stunningly photographed movie that offers an intimate look into the lives of a Dolpo tribe.

Audience Member Beautiful film with beautiful music. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member I went into this movie assuming it was a documentary and was fine with that, but was then incredibly and very pleasantly surprised to find that it was a well-laid out story with tremendous authenticity. Great film that really seems to capture the lives of a traditional people in a very rugged landscape. Beautifully shot on location, which adds such value to the overall production. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review Audience Member It is a privilege to travel with the people of Dolpo. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member A simple, elegant tale, beautifully shot. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member No big explosions, no CGI, no car crashes, in fact not a lot of action and more a simple story than a complex conflict. Enjoyed it a great deal, worth watching if you want to get some insights into people, who one (or at least I) had no contact with and almost no knowledge. Over the course of a few hours you get to know people who live in a very different environment but you learn to appreciate and enjoy visiting with. Beautifully shot, haunting score. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Watched this film as part of the Enfance Nepal charity fund raiser. "Himalaya" unveiled an unknown landscape, unknown way of life and shared details of the way Nepalese people living on the border between Tibet survive. I certainly would not want that life. The film highlighted how pride, anger and determination can overcome many obstacles. The dramatic shots at 17,000 feet altitude of the villagers trekking through the mountains, over snow fields and with yaks was breath-taking. How they managed some of those angles was very impressive. The plot was fairly simple but the tension between the elders of the village, the dash of romance and the role of the charismatic old chief was impressive. There was sufficient tension at the beginning and middle by things tapered off towards the close but still enjoyable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews
