86% 49 Reviews Tomatometer 52% Fewer than 50 Ratings Audience Score In Hold Me Tight, Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Bergman Island) gives another riveting performance as Clarisse, a woman on the run from her family for reasons that aren't immediately clear. Widely renowned as one of France's great contemporary actors but less well-known in North America for his equally impressive work behind the camera, Mathieu Amalric's sixth feature as director is his most ambitious to date. This virtuosic, daringly fluid portrait of a woman in crisis alternates between Clarisse's adventures on the road and scenes of her abandoned husband Marc (Arieh Worthalter) as he struggles to take care of their children at home. Amalric's film keeps viewers uncertain as to the reality of what they're seeing until the final moments of this moving, unpredictable, and richly rewarding family drama. Hold Me Tight trips over style while reaching for substance; fortunately, it has Vicky Krieps' stellar performance to keep it from falling down.

Daniela T This is difficult to watch but ultimately very rewarding. A story that can only really be told as a film, which is sufficient reason to see it without the rest. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/24 Full Review Justin T The exquisite Vicky Krieps plays a woman who decides, out of the blue, to abandon her husband and kids in the gorgeous and elegiac "Hold Me Tight," directed by Mathieu Amalric. Told in a series of fragmented memories, the film creates a mosaic-like portrait of a doomed marriage, drawn from a collection of seemingly disparate images that only coalesce in the final moments. Like flipping through a photo album of polaroids, we catch glimpses of a happy home interspersed with occasional moments of genuine misery and rage. Throughout, Krieps brings a staggering level of emotional rawness to the role, breaking our hearts again and again as she tries to make sense of her unthinkable decision to leave behind everything she seemingly loves. There is a mystery underneath it all, which the film delicately reveals as it pulls back the layers of the onion to show us where it all went wrong for Krieps' mournful and defiant Clarisse. The rest of the cast is magnificent, especially the staggeringly handsome Arieh Worthalter as Clarisse's deeply confused husband who must somehow manage to go on. Brilliant and unmissable. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/23 Full Review debbie m This movie was so confusing for me, with no consistent timeline and difficulty figuring out what was happening. I had to ask someone else as I was leaving who had researched the film before going to the theatre what it was about as I was left guessing.
