When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman), middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up -- and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio -- the old gang may not be happy to see him.

Critics Consensus

The look of Hook is lively indeed but Steven Spielberg directs on autopilot here, giving in too quickly to his sentimental, syrupy qualities.

Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune A woefully uneven retelling of the ''Peter Pan'' story. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times For very much like Peter, it has clearly gotten harder for this director to break free of the lure of material things and believe in simple magic. Terri A family favorite from the past. Took the grandkids. Loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Grant F. This a great movie. Steven did a great job with the cast and dustins hook is the best ive seen in live action and robin did a amazing job. The plot, and the story is great although julia did a great job but she should had been blonde. And smee was great the actor did a funny great job. The stunts and swords fights are great. The child actors were amazing along with lost boys actors too. The sets were great. Further all i dont no why people think its bad. its my childhood and still is now. BUT HOW DOES HOOK DIE AT THE END? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/23/25 Full Review Audience Member The "critics" are high or too stupid to see that this film is a masterpiece. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/22/25 Full Review Mark M The critics were obviously out for blood here. Not a perfect Spielberg film, but pure magic. You cannot watch Robin's performance without a tear and a smile. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/22/25 Full Review Oz S Aims for a grand reimagining but ends up feeling fairly generic. The child actors lean heavily into overacting, and several character motivations never fully make sense, especially Hook’s elaborate plotting. The visual effects and greenscreen work haven’t aged gracefully, and today they stand out more than they should. Still, the film has moments that shine. The soundtrack is pleasant, though it doesn’t linger in memory for long. Robin Williams, however, is the heart of the movie. He delivers a phenomenal performance, full of energy and warmth, and he elevates scenes that might otherwise fall flat. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/20/25 Full Review Virtue H Hook remains one of my top 3 favourite films of all time. As a kid, its one of the greatest adventures on which one could ever embark. As an adult, it holds a mirror up to remind you of the important things in life. I'm a millennial who grew up with boomer parents. They were very much like Peter Banning in the beginning of this film - always working and too busy for the little things. Your children will grow up while your back is turned; while you're on the phone or at work - doing 'important' things. They only wait so long for you. If you wait too long, by the time you put your phone down, they may have already lost interest in waiting and you've lost them. Anyone who calls this film 'syrupy' or whatever other nonsense I've seen on this website, has clearly missed the point. "Your children love you. They want to play with you. How long do you think that lasts?...We have a few special years with our children when they're the ones that want us around. After that, you're going to be running after them for a bit of attention. It's so fast, Peter. It's a few years, then it's over. And you are not being careful. And you are missing it." Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/25 Full Review Read all reviews
