When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman), middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up -- and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio -- the old gang may not be happy to see him.

Critics Consensus

The look of Hook is lively indeed but Steven Spielberg directs on autopilot here, giving in too quickly to his sentimental, syrupy qualities.

Gene Siskel Chicago Tribune A woefully uneven retelling of the ''Peter Pan'' story. Rated: 2.5/4 Mar 26, 2019 Full Review Kenneth Turan Los Angeles Times For very much like Peter, it has clearly gotten harder for this director to break free of the lure of material things and believe in simple magic. Terri A family favorite from the past. Took the grandkids. Loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/25 Full Review Lynn H One my favorite movies of all time. Robin Williams is amazing. Dustin Hoofman is amazing. As someone who has always loved Peter Pan it's such a great spin off to the original tale. Also to see Neverland in this movie, they out did themselves, it's magical. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/25 Full Review Jace T So when this movie came out it was panned (no pun intended) pretty hard by critics. They were dead wrong about this film. Hook is an incredible movie that has tons of joy, action, and fun for kids, but also pain, hardship, and lessons for adults. They took a gamble trying to make a story where Pan left the Lost Boys and became an adult with adult problems who comes back to Neverland, and this movie absolutely nails it. To me, this is a beloved classic that I grew up with, and still thoroughly enjoy to this day. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/23/25 Full Review Shooty B This movie is really excruciating, despite having some really good ideas. Spielberg was just a really bad choice to direct this, even though you'd think it would be right up his alley. The issue is that it's insanely corny and childish, but it has a lot of adult themes, so it lacks any cohesion. It's just all over the place. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/22/25 Full Review BRizz 2 Steven Spielberg delivered one of the most magical reinterpretations of a classic story with Hook—a film that has lived on for decades, allowing us to grow up alongside a new take on Peter Pan. This wasn’t just a retelling; it was a twist on the tale we all knew, one that asked the question: what if Peter Pan grew up, forgot Neverland, and had to return to save it? Casting Robin Williams as an adult Peter was pure genius. His natural warmth and humor made the idea instantly believable, and his journey from a disconnected grown-up to the boy who could fly again was as touching as it was exciting. Opposite him, Dustin Hoffman’s transformation into the theatrical, menacing, yet oddly charming Captain Hook was nothing short of breathtaking. Together, they created a timeless hero-villain dynamic that still holds up. Julia Roberts as Tinker Bell was a casting choice I initially thought might feel off—but she pulled it off beautifully. To this day, when I see her in that role, I’m instantly reminded of my aunt from my childhood. Maggie Smith as an older Wendy was perfect, especially since the film plays with time in such a fascinating way—Neverland remains timeless, yet the real world marches on. Seeing her in this role is surreal, especially because, to me, Maggie Smith has always looked the same. She had that dignified “older” look even then, and now, years later, it’s hard to picture her any other way. The Lost Boys were cast with such energy and variety that they gave Neverland a whole new life. Every character had their own quirks and personality, making the island feel full of genuine history and heart. Hook is a film that captures the spirit of Peter Pan while adding layers of emotion and nostalgia that make it just as appealing to adults as it is to children. Knowing it’s coming back to theaters for its anniversary fills me with excitement—I’ve already rewatched it at home just to prepare for seeing it on the big screen again. Simply put, Hook isn’t just a movie—it’s a memory, a feeling, and a piece of childhood magic that never really leaves you. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/12/25 Full Review Shane P When I saw the low rating I immediately knew it was because of hack reviewers who didn't understand the magic of this movie. Such fond memories. Great family movie. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/09/25 Full Review Read all reviews
