Critics Consensus

A scrappy coming of age dramedy that pulls off a surprisingly moving tonal sleight of hand, I Like Movies is fiercely unsentimental about cinema nostalgia and all the better for it.

Tara Brady Irish Times It’s enough to restore one’s faith in the near-extinct subgenre once known as the teen comedy. Rated: 4/5 Dec 23, 2023 Full Review Amil Niazi Globe and Mail Levack has done a remarkable job with her feature-film debut, playing with tropes that have time-honoured traditions but are always in need of a refresh. Mar 6, 2023 Full Review Radheyan Simonpillai CTV's Your Morning Imagine if Superbad were directed by a woman who didn’t allow the toxic masculinity and misogyny to go unchecked, while also l giving her genuinely funny and moving characters the room for growth and empathy. I Like Movies does that. Rated: 4/5 Mar 4, 2023 Full Review Louis Skye (Ronita Roy Mohan) Women Write About Comics There’s some great acting in this film and the story will resonate with certain groups... I Like Movies has too narrow a focus in terms of it’s story and the cast of characters aren’t diverse or compelling enough to keep me riveted. Aug 20, 2025 Full Review Andrew Fukui Geek Vibes Nation An emotional and unapologetically human film with a challenging protagonist that truly tests its audience. Rated: 8.5/10 Jul 17, 2025 Full Review Ian Simmons Kicking the Seat Levack carefully plants the seeds of her film’s serious turn throughout, so that when "I Like Movies" steers hard into its coming-of-age rough patch, the tonal shift feels natural. Nol P On: I Like Movies... I never had heard of this movie and may not have if it was not suggested on Paramount Plus. This independent (CANADIAN) production from 2022 is yes a bit out there but very real at the same time. This movie takes place in the year 2002 (with a Punch Drunk Love reference) and which is right at the very height of video rentals. This movie was quite nostalgic to me and my days working full time at a Blockbuster Video location in Penticton. Still to today it was one of the very best jobs I ever had. Many good mems. I Like Movies has quite a bit of suggested matter but in many regards it does hit home. If you can get around and beyond the average acting, which is more real than say the typical Hollywood glam overacting and their just following scripts, you will enjoy it. The ending came together quite nicely with "heartwarming heartfelt" and that gained some points. Overall: 7 out of 10. Nostalgia aspect: 10! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/05/25 Full Review Angelo P. I hated and loved Lawrence! But I really loved this movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/25 Full Review Ruben M. Really Enjoyable, pleasantly surprised at balance of comedy and charming but poignant Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/24/25 Full Review Audience Member This movie was a surprise in the best way. A narcissistic movie buff works in a video movie rental house and crosses several lines, leaving chaos and a lot of hurt feelings in his wake. He alienates virtually everyone who cares for him and learns some painful life lessons. A worthwhile coming of age movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/25 Full Review Bugs B Wow, what a gem! Stumbled on this Canadian indie film streaming on Hollywood Suite 2000's. Yes a "coming of age" film and anyone who went to Carleton University in Ottawa will get a big kick out of it. The main character growing up in Burlington wants to be accepted into NYU's film program but ends up at Carleton. Lots of emotion, great acting, funny drama. 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Dane B. M The first ten minutes seemed like forever. It felt amateurish. I stayed with it and it just got better and better. The emotional meter ran from funny to sad to poignant. Isaiah Lehtinen played his part so well, I thought at first it was his autobiography. All the actors were superlative. It took me by surprise. I loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/19/25 Full Review Read all reviews
