Critics Consensus

A prehistoric drama with the heart of a western, Iceman uses classic archetypes -- and deft direction -- to tell a stark and simple yet powerfully effective story.

Rex Reed Observer One can imagine Richard Harris or Charlton Heston in the role, but without any star power, Vogel does quite nicely. Rated: 3/4 Mar 15, 2019 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times "Iceman" is almost like something unearthed itself: a recognizable B western sharpened as much by its glints of psychology as by its kinetic savagery. Mar 14, 2019 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times We can... easily follow the unsubtitled narrative. Less clear is why the German filmmaker Felix Randau would have the imaginative idea of reconstructing the possible final days of Europe's best-preserved mummy, only to give him such a basic plot. Mar 14, 2019 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review An immersive and entertaining act of cinematic speculation, albeit limited by its simplistic plotting. Rated: 3/4 Jan 9, 2024 Full Review Sergio F. Pinilla Cinemanía (Spain) A spectacular and very believable... adventure and survival film. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 4/5 Oct 28, 2020 Full Review Jim Ross TAKE ONE Magazine The underlying simplicity of ICEMAN is both a blessing and a hindrance. Felix Randau, however, does some stunning work. We may not understand the language, but we can feel every blow and chill and be captivated by the excellent visuals, words be damned. Kenneth P For a movie that had no understandable language it held my attention for its entirety. Beautifully filmed and wonderfully acted it had me pondering how man could have survived such an unforgiving environment. A bleak, lonely and cruel world that made me think long and hard about life and survival some 5000 years ago. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Audience Member Great looking film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Rob T In the first few minutes, I wanted to leave. No dialog, no action... you know, all the things we've come to expect from a "good" movie. But the more I watched, the more I wanted to watch. It made you wonder what times were like over 5,000 years ago. Violence was the only way to survive. But no one back then (or now) could understand why people do what they do. They just wanted revenge on those who took something dear away from them. (spoiler alert) And even the hero has revenge exacted on himself. I felt like telling the characters in the film, "Hey, he or she did this because..." But all we could do was just let it all play out. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/07/23 Full Review John-Paul S For a film with barely any dialogue, this was fantastic. A Stone Cold, Stone Age thriller - highly recommended! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/07/23 Full Review Daniel Otto Jack P Contra some reviewers, by the end I think this Neolithic existential thriller transcends revenge drama (not that it necessarily needed to) and peeks into the cosmic. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Paul S This movie was really excellent. For a movie with no real spoken words, only the use of body language, etc, as the means of communication.. it is still very easy to follow and you're totally immersed in the storyline. Acting was amazing, movie setting, music. I just really thought this movie was incredible and a must see. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/28/22 Full Review Read all reviews
