What to Know

Critics Consensus

Although Chloë Grace Moretz gives it her all and the story adds an intriguing supernatural twist to its melodramatic YA framework, If I Stay is ultimately more manipulative than moving.

Roxana Hadadi Punch Drunk Critics If I Stay is the best when it focuses on its characters and relationships. Everything else is somewhat extraneous. Rated: 3/5 Jan 9, 2017 Full Review Anthony Lane New Yorker The title refers to Mia's fraught decision-should she cling to existence or just give up?-and, well before the end, even loyal viewers will be begging her to hurry up and choose. Sep 15, 2014 Full Review Peter Travers Rolling Stone Documentarian R.J. Cutler, in his feature debut, joins Moretz in delivering this pap as if it meant something. Cue eye rolling. Rated: 2/4 Sep 4, 2014 Full Review Joe Lipsett Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr Podcast Grace Moretz is miscast in this drama that sidelines all of its secondary characters to focus on a romance that lacks any chemistry and director Cutler's lack of visual imagination is disappointing. Maybe the best YA parents since Easy A, though! Rated: 3/5 May 18, 2022 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse It's a study of life and loss, leaning heavily on the regret of building relationships only to see them disappear in the wink of an eye. Luckily Moretz's subtle performance prevents the movie from becoming a soap opera of despair. William B A great romance movie, mostly because of Chloe Grace Moretz Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review Sarah W This movie is well acted and a decent chick flick, albeit not my favorite chick flick. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/01/24 Full Review Tim M What starts as a fairly mediocre teen drama turns saccharine come If I Stay's heavy-handed supernatural conceit. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review Simon R Wonderful movie, that touches the heart and makes you think deeply about life and your purpose. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/04/23 Full Review Emilliano Jr S I dont feel any emotions after watching this. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/19/23 Full Review Brandon A An alright romance, but nothing great compared to other better romance films. I would say this is one of Chloe Moretz better performances in her career, so that's a plus. But I couldn't help but feel that the film was filled to the brim with basic romance tropes and cliches. I think the book executed it a little better compared to what the movie did, and the ending was very abrupt and out of nowhere, it could have been executed better. While the film does touch upon deep themes and messages, the movie also suffers from it's pacing, meaning it can get quite boring at times. But all the flaws aside, while it's not as executed as well as the book, it's an alright romance that's certainly not a bad watch but not amazing as you want it to be as well.
