Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com One of the main pleasures of watching In My Room comes from feeling your way around, enjoying the ambient sound design, and making your own thematic connections. Rated: 3.5/4 Oct 11, 2019 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times "In My Room" is a movie about emptiness, yet it clamors with ideas. Oct 10, 2019 Full Review Mike D'Angelo AV Club [T]his droll yet poignant amalgam of the fantastic and the mundane ultimately suggests that while people can dramatically alter their behavior in response to extreme circumstances, on some fundamental level they don't really change. Rated: A- Oct 9, 2019 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine In My Room is playful and fun (which I can’t say of the other two films by Köhler I’ve seen, the purposefully-but-still drab Bungalow and Sleeping Sickness), full of surprise song cues... Jan 4, 2023 Full Review Jason Shawhan Nashville Scene Subtle but very sure of itself, In My Room from German writer-director Ulrich Köhler is all about having to manage solitude when what 1984's Night of the Comet calls "the burden of society" is bearing down upon you at all times. Sep 10, 2021 Full Review Matt Cipolla Film Monthly There's a central dynamic that mercifully buoys what could have been wholly detached and the visuals are lush, but the ideas here aren't much of anything new. Audience Member Armin is a regular guy. Bored, got no girl and he has a sick grandmother. He sees her and his parents sometimes and he drinks a few beers and go to techno gigs. That's about it. Then everything changes. Everyone disappear. He does not know why but there are no people anywhere. He mess up his life even more. Drinks, pukes, sleep when he can. He eat and shower where it suits him and he is actually totally alone now. But how big is really the difference? A good film with an almost scary plot. I can relate on my worst days and that's as cool as it's depressing I guess. Sweet acting, nice shots and this not too original film (the thing has been done before) works just fine, but it's a bit long and turns flat at times when the "emptyness" is the most present. 6.5 out of 10 dances in front of trucks. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
