Jason Bailey Flavorwire It's the kind of total miscalculation that can only be cooked up by a writer of real skill and passion, going all in on a spectacularly bad idea. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review Tom Shone Guardian Think of it as a rom-com version of The Shining, or Nicholas Sparks on a macro-budget. Rated: 2/5 Apr 25, 2014 Full Review Peter Debruge Variety The setup never really matures beyond a sentimental teenage fantasy with a TV-caliber climax tacked on ... Apr 24, 2014 Full Review Brian Roan The Film Stage In Your Eyes manages to make a grounded, effective and honestly moving romance out of a premise that on it's face seems self-consciously novel. Rated: B- Jun 6, 2016 Full Review Simon Foster Screen-Space [A] disposable but not entirely unlikable confection that feels like a first-timer's passion project and not the work of an A-list writer of Whedon's stature. May 16, 2014 Full Review Casey Cipriani Movie Mezzanine A nice first step into Whedon's attempt to site his big-budget fantastical ideas into a smaller, more personal film. Jacob B Seeing this film made me lament what could have been with Bellwether Pictures. A company dedicated to small-scale stories on miniscule budgets as breather episodes after work on big-budget VFX-driven productions, now that Joss Whedon finally made it to the big leagues with The Avengers. But alas, that's not what happened and this production company might as well be defunct by now. Joss's experiences with Age of Ultron led to him leaving Marvel, the cracks in his "god among geekdom" image were starting to show in 2017 after his recently divorced ex-wife accused him of infidelity, the Justice League debacle happened and his script for a Wonder Woman movie was leaked and NOT well-received and then his dirty secrets were exposed in 2021. I bring up all that because seeing this film made me sad that, with his tainted legacy, we'll never see what kinds of micro-budget stories he could come up with. I've honestly grown desensitised these past few years to prominent personalities having shocking revelations about them revealed to the public to the point that the controversies surrounding Neil Gaiman didn't faze me at all. Luckily for most of these people, I have no problem separating art from the artist...and Whedon didn't actually direct this film anyway since he was busy with Marvel. All this to build up to the fact that...I liked In Your Eyes. It's not perfect but I did find myself preferring it over the Much Ado About Nothing film that Whedon DID direct. One such flaw, for instance, is how some of the issues could've easily been resolved if they just spoke on their mobile phones, or at least pretended to, so that they wouldn't look like schizophrenics to the people around them. Other flaws are how the psychic connection is something we just have to roll with in an otherwise grounded world, the handling of the husband came off as more sympathetic than intended in my opinion and mixed feelings about the way it ends. Maybe they were things that could be handled in a nonexistent sequel? I just thought it came off as slightly less happy than Joss intended with an offhanded mention of Canada being put in the script in case somebody asked certain questions. TL;DR That underrated Netflix show Sense8 did the "psychic connection between strangers" premise better. But make no mistake, the good does outweigh the bad. The actors do a good job, the dialogue can be quite funny at times without overdoing the wiseass crap like other Whedon scripts are accused of doing and while the plot is predictable, it's executed well enough that it still comes off as compelling rather than boring. The two leads are likeable and go through good character development resulting in a surprisingly fun, albeit still working within micro-budget confines, climax that has them using their life experiences to guide each other to what they need to do...and is surprisingly similar to the first season finale of the aforementioned Sense8. Oh my God, did The Wachowskis and JMS rip off Joss Whedon? I suppose it could've been an inspiration but I never found anything suggesting that Sense8 was being done with some film they saw at Tribeca in mind penned by, albeit not directed by, a guy in the entertainment industry on a similar wavelength as them. They did do a better job fleshing out the premise and it does have enough genre mashup to stand out. In conclusion, provided you can get past the Joss Whedon controversies and don't mind dealing with a low-budget film every once in a while, In Your Eyes is a pretty good watch and, save for Warm Bodies and Beautiful Creatures, a much better paranormal romance flick than Hollywood's attempts during the year before this movie came out when they were all trying to make the next Twilight. Really wish you behaved better, Joss. Then maybe we could've had more movies like this and even a running gag going about how any director was doomed to be stuck in your shadow since you're writing the script and they aren't. Remember what I mentioned at the beginning of this review: separate art from the artist. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/19/25 Full Review Alexandra C It’s a hidden gem of a movie. The husband wife relationship is perfect I wish there had been more of that. His life did equal her plight. It’s a good watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/11/25 Full Review Ashley H the concept of having telepathy with someone across the country is interesting, but didn't think the ending was really nice. The kissing made it look like it was all put together, but looking back, not a very great ending. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review steve d I was hoping to like it less than I did given the recent Joss revelations. He still has a lot of talent and an eye for a talented cast. Wish I didn't love his work as much as I hate him. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Interest sci fi concept with a standout performance by zoey . She is absolutely perfect in these odd type of cute/innocent roles like ruby sparks I loved the first 3/4 of the movie . The last quarter seemed a bit hallmarky/cheeesy 3.2 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/07/20 Full Review Audience Member Es divertida y tiene una buena trama, hasta tiene momentos profundos que dan para reflexionar.
