Audience Member There are two historical things that make this worth watching: the fact that it's often considered the first real narrative full-length film, and that it's emotional storyline made a real-world impact on Swedish social security laws. Otherwise, it's largely a melodramatically sad slog with a few great moments (hiding Ingeborg in the floor). Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Melodramatic, but surprisingly fast-moving and involving. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Early feature from Sjostrom that's still incredibly touching--the last scene in particular is beautiful. Sjostrom demonstrates his pioneering talent in visual storytelling, and, unlike most of his contemporaries, he's quite subtle, telling the story mostly with framing, mis-en-scene, and a great eye for actors and performances. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member The Swedes are known for their tremendously sad, brooding cinema, and this early silent film was a precursor to that. It's captivating drama, though, and one of the finer examples of early film acting. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Read all reviews
