During the Vietnam War, Army Capt. Keene (Beau Bridges) is taken prisoner by Ho (Liem Whatley), a teen member of the Viet Cong, and moved to an enemy base. Once there, Ho learns that Col. Tuong (Haing S. Ngor) plans to abuse Keene. The young man -- certain that Keene could have killed him but opted not to -- disregards Tuong's orders and brings Keene to another base, where he might receive better treatment. Keene and Ho get to know each another on the trip, but it's a trying journey.
