Critics Consensus

Jiu Jitsu pits an ancient order of warriors against an alien invasion -- yet despite that appealingly bizarre premise and a cast that includes Nicolas Cage and Tony Jaa, it's the audience that loses.

While Cage finally appears about 40 minutes into the film as an eccentric expert swordsman who makes paper hats in his spare time, the levity of his very presence provides some measure of a relief. Go to Full Review

The underpowered fight scenes manage to make action stars Tony Jaa and JuJu Chan appear unimpressive, while the effects are shoddy throughout and the alien itself is a bland creation. Go to Full Review

Cage goes Obi-Yawn Kenobi as a neo-hippie martial arts mentor, but cedes the lead to Canadian stuntman, martial artist and charisma black hole Alain Moussi. Jiu Jitsu comes up short on every level, especially in the omnipresent fight scenes. Go to Full Review
Carla Hay Culture Mix 04/17/2022
Jiu Jitsu has nothing to do with the martial arts craft of jiu jitsu, just like this movie has nothing to do with high-quality entertainment. It's just a messy parade of sci-fi action schlock with tacky visual effects. Go to Full Review

Steve C May 31 Jiu Jitsu, plus Predator wannabe, plus Nicolas Cage, plus Tony Jaa and you still get something more disappointing than a stubborn common cold. Who wrote this? See more Brad CKA L 11/26/2024 Is Nic Cage the greatest actor of all time? Hear me out. Who in film history has elevated more bad movies from unwatchable to watchable? Which Academy Award winner has stooped further into the underbelly of amateur filmmaking and pulled up movies to the light of your and my attention than one Nicolas Cage? Who has made more untalented Director's dreams come true? Just sayin's all. I don't even know why Nicholas Cage or any other reputable actors accepted to being in such a stupid movie. The director must have been high most of the time. DO NOT WATCH, biggest waste of time and industry money spent on a movie ever. See more Dan D 08/25/2023 Wow, this was bad. The alien was a cross between the Predator and robot from the Netflix version of Lost in Space. Bad story, bad dialogue, bad acting, bad action scenes. This was awful. Nicolas Cage couldn't save this thing. See more Cris T 04/20/2023 It is inconceivable that a good actor would be willing to participate in something so horrible. Nicolas Cage must be short of money or short of attention. A mix between Predator and Mortal Kombat, but with a low budget. See more sam w 09/19/2022 Like ‘Predator' but with martial arts. You have to give it credit for its inventiveness in setting, style and commitment to its comic book origins, but it's poorly acted, poorly written and it takes its outlandish premise far too seriously. The fight scenes are numerous, fast paced and entertaining, but use slow motion excessively. Cheap special effects, annoying first person camerawork and a silly plot makes this a weird production overall. Cage brightens things up briefly, but just adds to the oddness and doesn't make things much better. See more Read all reviews
