Audience Member My good friend josh invited me to see this with him and he started throwing a tantrum thinking they were making a movie based on his life. He threw m and ms and the security guards face when they were called. It was embarrassing and I left the theater and didn’t speak to him for a month Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/19 Full Review adnan a Josh is a small-scale art movie that is beautifully directed by Iram Parveen Bilal. I am proud of the fact that the film's director is a woman and also features a strong female lead; a very good performance from Aamina Sheikh. Iram shows great maturity in handling the transitional scenes, edits and general framing of the shots. The film is under two hours and feels just as compact with an impactful story. The feudal system is the crux of the narrative and while it's not greatly dissected, the message is concise and effective. There has been a lot of talk about the revival of Pakistani cinema with the likes of Waar taking the box-office by storm. But it is the smaller and more poignant films like Josh that I would rather get behind and recommend for its beautiful execution. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Fairly intense and finely shot story from the rarely scene environs of Pakistan's rural backwaters including some very damning statements on how life works and exists there. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Very interesting Pakistani film shown during the London Indian film festival. Through a well told story, it delves into the issues facing many Asian countries: cultural clash between the cosmopolitan urban life (here Karachi) and traditional countryside values, class conflict, feudal structures with omnipotent landlords, the (very) slow changing status of women, the role of school/education to name a few. At 3h and without intermission (it's a serious film, no Bollywood dance and song here) it felt a bit long, especially during the long exposition, which was a little confused. But once the story is established, the film is gripping. Great performances, especially by the main character, a young, modern, educated, independent and working woman goes on a quest to break the silence after her old nanny disappears without warning. Nice camera work, almost in a cinema verite/ethnographic style. Unusual for such a film to reach commercial distribution network. Moving in the right direction...
