Charles Webb MTV The whole thing is a mess: from conception, to tone, to aesthetics. Worse, Yamato never finds a valid reason to exist. DanTheMan 2 Space Battleship Yamato isn't a franchise I hold a strong affection for, although I do enjoy it immensely, it's hard to deny the legendary influence it holds across science fiction media as a whole. Seeing it adapted into a live-action film came with certain trepidations, however, the film ultimately won me over very quickly feeling a mix of old Star Wars and the 2009 Star Trek movie, capturing a sleek futurist look without losing sight of the 70s illustration style. Takashi Yamazaki takes his fair share of creative liberties with the source material, often taking cues from the second season of the show more than the original, but he brilliantly realises the universe the crew of the Yamato inhabit, all feeling like a lived-in world which many western sci-fi films struggle to do even on larger budgets. It does feel like a schlocky melodramatic space opera from yesteryear but the loveable performances from the cast and gorgeous musical score by Naoki Satō make it work. Unfortunately, it does kind of collapse in on itself once the Gamilas make their appearance but the pedal is on the floor from the moment the film starts with plenty of cheese, heightened emotions and leather jackets for everyone. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/13/23 Full Review Cinephemeride Somewhere between Battlestar Galactica and Armageddon, a rather successful science fiction film despite special effects not always up to par Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/27/23 Full Review Christopher P Some drastic changes from the anime, but it looks gorgeous! It is likely the only time we will see a live action version of the property, so enjoy it for what it is. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/16/23 Full Review Fernando L The original story and characters were changed and damaged too much the movie. CGI is weak and music score was weakly used. The original anime series is superb. This movie is nothing compared to it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Do yourself a favor, pass on this, but don't give up on the franchise. The animated series "Space Battleship Yamato: 2199" is superb. Period. Full stop. At best, this film is a poor rip-off of Battlestar Galactica void of any plot or character.
