      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Journey's End brings R.C. Sherriff's 90-year-old play to the screen with thrilling power, thanks to director Saul Dibb's hard-hitting urgency and brilliant work from a talented cast.

Tom R Such a tragic end It had a profound affect on me! Making me study operation Micheal in great detail. 5 star film Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review jwcdood JOURNEY'S END is a well directed, in the trenches, WWI drama; it's well acted and very realistic. The flick's not an action nor any sort of patriotic, flag waving movie and it's a top notch production. Be prepared to come away from it very (very) sober. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/05/23 Full Review Bob S Technically sound and well-acted (especially liked Paul Bettany as "Uncle") but the plot meandered and the ending was abrupt. Yes, the Germans did launch a spring offensive in 1918 but it failed (largely due to the arrival of fresh American troops, along with the tenacity of the Anglo-French forces). So, what's the point of "Journey's End"? I'm still looking for that definitive contemporary WWI film; there isn't one, where there are many in the WWII category. Many have good set-pieces or effective at establishing the awfulness of trench warfare, but none is complete. The best, for me remains either "Paths of Glory" or "Grand Illusion", both done by auteurs well over sixty years ago. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/08/23 Full Review Richard L I saw this movie after reading A Farewell to Arms and had kind of hoped for a similar 'feel' to it. Unfortunately, Journey's End is a bit more singular in its approach and although it's certainly a fine movie with excellent acting, I didn't feel like it brought anything new to the table. You could certainly do worse, but I was a bit underwhelmed. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/01/23 Full Review Arthur B Dour but perhaps it was probably a good insight into front line trench warfare in 1918 -- moving Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review s p A beautiful film, focuses more on the interactions between the different officers, their psychological state and each one's reaction to their situation. A well crafted homage so the memories of the ones who have suffered so much will not be forgotten, from the writer of the original play as well as to his comrades. Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Director Saul Dibb doesn't quite succeed in making the drama feel fresh, but this is a sensitive and handsomely performed adaptation. Apr 20, 2020 Full Review Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald If it's not pacifist, it's certainly a profoundly anti-war statement about men under ultimate stress. One hundred years on, it's never too soon, never too late for that idea. Rated: 4/5 Nov 8, 2018 Full Review David Stratton The Australian Journey's End is a powerful and moving tribute to the men who fought in the trenches. Rated: 3.5/5 Nov 2, 2018 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson The most fitting and laudable word to compliment the "Journey’s End" ensemble is maturity. Each of the principal players exudes some growth of that trait both on and off camera. Rated: 3/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Sarah Brinks Battleship Pretension You don't have to be a student of history to know that the trenches during World War I were horrific places to fight. Journey's End does not attempt to glorify that field of battle, but it also never quite fully commits to the true horror either...
