Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times We start with a standard drug movie and end up with so many monologues to the dog that the dialogue coach must have needed a pooper scooper. Blu B The best moments are when it manages to work the K-9 comedy and the crime elements together. When it does that it's a fun pretty good movie actually. When it doesn't and just is more about gags or Belushi trying to solve the drug crime than it just becomes very run of the mill standard stuff that's a bit boring. The music is ok. Very late 80's early 90's and doesn't really fit being serious or light hearted. It has a weird Jamacian tone to it. Everything else isn't bad. Jerry the dog is the best thing. He is really good, well trained, funny, and doesn't have a mean cynical bone in his body. Belushi is doing his jaded cop thing but he has suprisingly good chemistry with Jerry the entire time. I get a solid amount of laughs from the two and their antics together. The villian is just generic and forgettable. The supporting cast in general is just ok. The direction is very basic stuff although the car chase was good. In the middle it feels like it takes a step down with antics like the poodle sex and trying to fit in Belshi's girlfriend which doesn't really flow well. And in general it has a weird tone where it takes itself super serious at times and other times it's little kid like also. It can't figure out which it wants to be. But when it works I actually enjoy it. Probably the best buddy cop dog movie for what it's worth. If your a die hard fan of any actors here or love German Shepards maybe try this. But for the most part your not missing out on much with this. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/03/25 Full Review Stephen C Funny in 1 hour and 42 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/25/25 Full Review Audience Member Un excelente comedia para pasar un domingo por la noche le tengo mucho cariño a esta bien llevada comedia Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/22/25 Full Review Jim M Rotten Tomatoes wants it fun and respectful. And specific. K-9 is a dog movie. The best acting was, by far, the dog, and the writing seems to have a dog's understanding of human dynamics. I think a dog watched Beverly Hills Cop, drank a few beers, and typed out the script in an hour. I enjoy a good suspension of disbelief, but even suspension presupposes that you hang on to reality by thread. The totally proposterous relationship Belushi's character has with his girlfriend in which he has zero respect for her time or input or value to his life (she owns a very nice house in which he lives) and she accepts all that as her wacky life where her boyfriend is just that committed to catching bad guys. Unlike Eddie Murphy's delivery of Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop, Belushi is incapable of producing believable commitment that is shrouded in irreverent humor. The movie feels like a high school production. At a bad high school; that has never seen a good movie; and only had Beverly Hills Cop described to it by a dog. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/20/25 Full Review Keith S I'm not a fan of James Bulushi at all but I thought he was stellar in this fun movie. It kept a good vibe and fun, funny groove throughout the entire movie which was a nice change of pace for these types of movies. It was just GOOD.
