Audience Member A truly surprising and frank coming of age film that is sure to offend some more sensitive types but definitely worth watching for those who enjoy honest, well acted dramas about the awkwardness of being young and uncertain about ... well, everything. The young leads are very good, especially the two boys, who convincingly capture that awkwardness as they struggle to define themselves in a world of aloof adults, a changing society and the fickleness of first loves. Very well directed, good use of music, the only con I would mention (thus the four and not five star review here), would be the feeling that the film ends on an abrupt note after a twist involving the three lead actors that seemed forced somewhat, but that's a minor complaint as the rest of the film is so good and moves along nicely. Worth noting as well that though this film shows up on lists as an LGBT film, it's not necessarily so. While the topic is obviously in the mix, this is more about young people finding themselves, testing the waters, finding definitions (or trying to), etc, than it is a "gay" movie. In fact, the film's ending sort of suggests that none of the leads have made that decision just yet and we don't know exactly what, if any label, they will adopt for themselves later on as adults. Don't be turned off by the LGBT category here or be expecting a straight up LGBT film either. Enjoy! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Set in Denmark in the mid-seventies as Martin, a 14 year old guy suffers the loss of his mother. He seem to cope with it, but the rest of the family seem quite a mess. His confirmation party is coming up soon and while he is dealing with a girl from class he also seem interested in one of his buddies. Sexual confusion is a big topic here. This coming of age film is well acted, well told and it looks swell. The acting is good and the characters are both likeable and well buildt up, even with it's sudden racing near the end. There are not much speed walking here, so I must say this gentle drama, with some funnier moments took me by surprize. It was nothing like I imagined to be. Pretty explicit for an rated PG-13 flick with drinking and sextalk all over. It's also quite uncomfortable at times. Villads Boye playing Martin is the movie's stand out, but this is never sad, dramatic or funny - just some place in the middle. 6 out of 10 sunglasses. Guy Lodge Variety Aided by Oplev's commendably gentle direction of his excellent young leads, Speed Walking is most notable for its delicately candid depiction of the earliest, most malleable stage of teen sexuality. Jun 13, 2018 Full Review Justin Lowe Hollywood Reporter Oplev is perfectly in tune with the script's tender tone, deftly guiding the believable cast through the film's frequent emotional twists and turns. Jun 13, 2018 Full Review Ben Sachs Chicago Reader The movie is so laden with period kitsch that it feels like a spoof. Oct 16, 2014 Full Review Alistair Ryder Gay Essential Teenage years are defined by a search to define your true identity, and there is no shortage of films about this - when coupled with a story about the messiness of grief, Oplev's film becomes far more original than it appears on the outside.
