Adam O Filmed in Paris, the film is in Portuguese, and the main actors are known in Brazil. The English subtitles and dubbing are by Netflix, not the film producers. The film follows a core part of the life of French educator Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail in the 1850s, and his investigations into the phenomenon of ‘turning tables’ which were widespread in Europe at the time, being sparked by spirit phenomena occurring around the world, especially those of the Fox Sisters in America. Interested in proving the ‘communications’ from the tables were not possible, Rivail witnesses various mediumship seances and investigates the forms of communication through different mediums. Inspired to compile and publish various books under the pseudonym of Allan Kardec, the film shows the challenges that Rivail, his wife, and his associates, faced due to persecution from the Catholic church, and the stigma given regarding spiritualisms at that time. Having studied the history of the different Spiritualist ideals and philosophies, and having looked in depth to the life of Allan Kardec and Spiritism, this is a very sympathetic film, and is highly worth watching for anyone interested in this spiritualisms. Reading the reviews of others, clearly Netflix need to create better English subtitles and dubbing. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/04/24 Full Review Alex M O assunto é interessantíssimo, mas a abordagem é bem tosca. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/06/23 Full Review T T Not good. Bad acting and bad dubbing. Boring. If you're interested in the character, check Wikipedia. It'll take you 10 minutes. That's what I did, after watching the movie. The movie itself is poorly made and not worth watching. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/09/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the best movies about spiritual truths of all times Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Wow, I really wanted to like this but it was almost impossible to get through. It lacked depth for me but adding insult to injury was the constant distraction of the mouths not matching with the words and the voice over being just terrible and sounding like its read off of cue cards. I don't really even feel like I got the story itself to any real degree. There was so much wrong about this movie but I don't want to beat a dead horse. Just bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a well made film, looking at the life of an important French educator, Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail, who turned his attention to scientifically and methodically investigating the spiritual phenomena that was captivating France, Europe and America during the mid-1850s. A Brazilian made biographic, honest in its approach, the core of this film revolves around the work by Rivail in his investigations, who takes the pen name "Allan Kardec", and who is currently revered as an important figure by spiritualists (Spiritists) for his books about spirit communication and mediumship. Very well worth watching by anyone with an interest in spirituality, mediumship, spirits and French history. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Read all reviews
