During World War II, chaos rules in Moscow as German forces close in, leaving citizens in a panic to flee the area, particularly at the train station. A young boy (Sergej Gusak) boards a train departing Moscow, but tension rises as the locomotive heads out of the city, where Nazi planes are attacking railroad lines. As the train moves further away from Moscow and imminent danger, the boy interacts with fellow passengers, finding a particular bond with a gypsy woman.
