Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com "King Kong Escapes" is a stoopid fresh monster movie. As you watch it, any initial instinct you might have ridicule it will give way to appreciation. Mar 24, 2021 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times It's good, simple low comedy, directed by Alan Rafkin, and seeing it is like being transported back to a Saturday afternoon in a small-town movie house 30 years ago. Mar 24, 2021 Full Review Noel Murray The Dissolve That said, both of the Tojo Kong movies are entertaining, for their cringe-inducing moments, and for the genuine beauty of Toho's model-work, rendered in Tohoscope. Mar 24, 2021 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Plays like a romper room version of a James Bond adventure. Rated: 2/4 Mar 26, 2021 Full Review Alan Jones Radio Times A few laughs and some low-rent toy model excitement are the only saving graces of this return King Kong engagement from director Inoshiro Honda. Rated: 2/5 Mar 24, 2021 Full Review TV Guide Staff TV Guide It's all as campy as can be and a great time waster... Mar 24, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Vincent W It’s so dang BORING. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review Isaac R this was very enjoyable, however the romance was lame Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/02/25 Full Review Justin T This pretty much has all the worst elements of Toho movies with some new ones, maybe it’s because my patience for this kind of movie has run out and what I would find endearing I now find boring and annoying. There aren’t any so-terrible-it’s-laughable moments like using a kaiju spine as a xylophone (yes I know that wasn’t a Toho movie). There is some fun from the silly moments and the cheesy monsters and some pretty basic city smashing so it’s not a total loss. The dubbing is terrible, possibly the worst I’ve ever heard, maybe the Japanese release was better. It’s really boring in places and the story is repetitive. I did like the new monster Mechani-Kong. I consider this movie non-canon in any kaiju franchise, the only real similarity with the original Kong was climbing a tower at the end. It’s a bit like a bad cross between Godzilla and James Bond. The finale had some fun city smashing but it’s mostly barely watchable nonsense. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/25/25 Full Review Rich A Classic battle old school fun! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Ethan G Everything in this film is so obviously fake that it's almost worth watching just for a laugh. 3/5 Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Audience Member Honestly this movie is too goofy to take seriously but not goofy enough to be much fun. It tries to have a the semi-serious tone of movies such as Godzilla vs Mothra, but involving even more outlandish things like a giant Mecha-Kong. With that, both Kong and Mecha-Kong are really kinda cheap looking, and the fight between them is practically non-existent, the movie ending with almost no real climax. It's hardly painful to get through (other than the main woman constantly yelling "KOOOONGG!!!!!!"), and luckily it's not very long, so it's over quickly. Honestly I don't recommend it to fans of the genre unless you were interested in seeing one of the more noble failures. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
