eric b Somewhat reminiscent of the ever-popular "Say Anything...," director Yasuzo Masumura's debut is a sweet romance set against a backdrop of parental imprisonment. Kinichi and Akiko both have fathers convicted of white-collar crime and meet during visiting hours at the prison. A whirlwind romance follows (the race track, the beach, the restaurants...), but issues of finding money for bail intrude. Meanwhile, Akiko's mother recuperates in a tuberculosis clinic while Kinichi's estranged mother is a shady, self-centered jewelry dealer. The young couple's chemistry is a delight, while Hitomi Nozoe is an irresistible beauty as Akiko. At just 74 minutes, the film's length seems just right for its slight story. A charming piece of work. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Besides being Masumura's outstanding debut, this is melodrama in its finest form, and yet it does not follow Hollywood's formula and stamp. The film shows romance and overall drama with an absolute purity rarely seen on screens, big and small ones; clichés can also enlighten the flavor of a story and this is strong evidence. I reckon I am a sucker for these movies, but this is a gorgeous ride. Kuchizuke is my lover. 99/100 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member great Japanese (romantic) drama.
