Critics Consensus

Kodachrome gains richer hues due to Ed Harris' colorful performance, which is enough to enliven a solid if predictable father-son road trip drama.

Robert Daniels 812filmreviews Kodachrome isn't so much a "bad" film as it is a predictable one. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review David Stratton The Australian There's nothing wrong with Harris's performance, but the character is despicable in so many ways that you don't care much about his fate. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 8, 2018 Full Review Wenlei Ma News.com.au While Kodachrome is let down by its generic beats and the way it telegraphs much of its dialogue, it has a wistfulness that ends up being rather effective. Rated: 3/5 Jun 7, 2018 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies It’s equal parts family drama and character study with maybe a pinch of black comedy. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 22, 2022 Full Review Daniel Howat Next Best Picture Kodachrome is a story we’ve seen in some form or another plenty of times. Maybe these themes keep showing up for a reason. Maybe that’s okay. Maybe it can serve as a reminder to not wait until your dad is dying to say what you need to say. Rated: 7/10 May 19, 2022 Full Review Ruth Maramis FlixChatter Film Blog The film feels personal + the filmmaker's passion for the subject matter is palpable. Unfortunately the sentimental melodrama and predictability dampen it from being truly great. Still, it's well worth a look for Ed Harris' performance. Seth S An underrated film that despite the over used plot of family forgiveness, has a ton of heart. As a photographer its a backdrop that I loved. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/02/24 Full Review Nicole S Great acting, interesting story line loosely based on actual events Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/04/24 Full Review Katie C The storyline was fairly predictable making this a light evening watch but then you are immediately taking notice of Ed Harris performance. Kudos to Ed on this one, the hospital scene was quite moving and I have mad respect for your craft! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/04/23 Full Review C. The movie was very predictable (his romance with the nurse i predicted within the first minute she appears) too many clichés, but the last scene on the father's death was so well done it made it worthwhile to watch till the end. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review Martin B It's a cliche movie. Old guy takes a trip with and estranged son or daughter. Bad feelings melt away as the miles click by for whatever reason. Heart warming reconcilation in the end with the offspring coming to some life changing realization. And really the ending just getting the film in on time, the death and the content of the photo's the son sees. Come on man, it's insulting it's so conveniently sappy. Maybe the acting puts it over average but I don't get how a formula plot can be above average. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/17/23 Full Review Kimberly P Ed Harris was the best, Jason Sudeikis carried his role perfectly. You believed they were father and son. Besides the fantastic storyline, acting, and soundtrack, this hit home for me personally. (I would have watched this earlier had it popped up for me) My father was a professional photographer and newspaper editor. We had a darkroom in the basement of our house and I learned to develop black and white film, along with my brothers. Digital is fine I guess, but unprocessed is lost in the crowd, as Ben says. I think anyone would really enjoy this film, for one or many reasons. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/17/23 Full Review Read all reviews
