In the 1930s, 18-year-old factory worker Paulette (Elise Guilbault) begins an affair with Belley (Michel Forget), a wealthy married man. However, she soon tires of being comfortably taken care of but hidden away and marries insurance salesman Frank (Luc Picard) -- who proves to be a callous and unfaithful husband. His infidelities continue even after Paulette gives birth to their son, driving her to an affair of her own. After Frank abandons the family, Paulette's drinking increases heavily.
