Audience Member As thrilling as my daily routine... or anybody else's for that matter. A misunderstanding. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member The daily existence of a woodcutter who lives in isolation, hunts and cooks his own meals. Alonso is very interesting because he chooses to define the people in his films through their daily mundane rituals rather than the typical character development in most other films. Like Liverpool and Los Muertos it has its share of mysteriousness but it's not quite as fascinating or moving. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member In a mildly perverse way, La Libertad reminds me of Jeanne Dielman. It takes 3 days of repeated chores to portray imprisonment, but apparently 1 day in the life of a woodcutter is enough to show freedom. Jeanne Dielman would work as poorly as a 70-minute film just as La Libertad could commit the mortal sin of tedium if it goes for 200 minutes. This said, La Libertad is a fluid, hypnotic, and wildly entertaining film. It is also an antidote to the strained poeticism of Carlos Reygadas' Japon.
