Audience Member La Bare is a very insightful documentary that shines a light on the behind-the-scenes aspects of the lives and skills of the male strippers at the famous adult entertainment club, La Bare. The film is directed by Magic Mike co-star, Joe Manganiello who obviously got a glimpse into this world, but with this film was able to get raw, unscripted testimonials from the dancers who are essentially professional athletes with how in shape they need to be. The back-stories of how many of them got into the stripping business is fascinating with one of them even being inspired by the film, Magic Mike to give it a go. Much of the focus is on the oldest and still-stripping, Randy "Master Blaster" Ricks who trains all of the men, and holds the world record for longest successful male stripping career and he is an impressive man to say the least. There's not a whole lot to be said about this documentary; you're either interested in the subject matter or you're not, but if you're comfortable with your sexuality and want to be educated on a taboo topic, this is a slam-dunk and impressive debut for Joe Manganiello behind the camera. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member No central character and basically just footage to show a lifestyle made it incredible boring and pretty much pointless. It has no flow and no real outcome it's trying to achieve. A pretty poorly-done documentary. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Awful. Low rent club & low rent strippers. Couldn't take anymore when two guys wearing sleeveless shirts & cowboy hats go to a supposed bachelorette party and "work it". It was by far, the worst effort I've ever seen. So I turned off the movie. Uncomfortably awful; and I am no prude. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member can't stop laughing. #myhometown Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Around the fifth documentary of these I've seen. THEY'RE ALL THE SAME! Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member Mildly interesting study of the lives of male strippers at a Dallas Club. These guys look good, work out, and need money, but interest tapers off with the recounting of the murder of the most charismatic of the group. Leah Greenblatt Entertainment Weekly You'll get your man-cake, if that's what you came for, but Manganiello works hard to show the sometimes harsh realities behind the oiled pecs and tear-away pants. Rated: B+ Dec 3, 2014 Full Review Sheila O'Malley RogerEbert.com "La Bare" shows its reality-TV origin in its structure, to sometimes a clichd degree, but overall it is a friendly and affectionate backstage look at the world of the mostly-straight male dancers at La Bare. Chris Carpenter Movie Dearest While (director Joe) Manganiello takes a generally straightforward, positive approach to his subject(s), he does show a bit of the dark side. Anyone interested in the art and/or commerce of male stripping will surely enjoy it.
