Dennis Harvey Variety This atmospheric and keenly observed feature captures with bittersweet lyricism the pathos of growing up subject to the whims of free-spirited grownups who themselves could use some adult supervision. Mar 14, 2017 Full Review Fionnuala Halligan Screen International A watchable, and even relatable drama, even though it could come from another planet now, never mind another era. Mar 12, 2017 Full Review Gillian Anderson The Stranger (Seattle, WA) Young star Sophia Mitri Schloss has an appealing, serious presence-and as Lane, she shows the helplessness of watching her mother spiral their life out of control, unable to do anything to ground them. Audience Member Young Sophia Mitri Schloss (Lane) carries this lyrical and bittersweet exploration of growing up on a hippie commune in the 70s. The film feels like a cinema verite fairytale, beautifully shot and acted, never heavy-handed. The last scene is one of my favorite endings in a film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie has absolutely no substance...at all! The actors were fine but really, the writer, director and producer have clearly surrounded themselves with people who aren't telling them the truth about their writing, directing or the stories that need to be produced. This shouldn't be called a story, we have no idea why, who, where.... all of the most important things when telling a story. The filming was beautiful and the casting was good but all of it were completely wasted on this story. We turned it off halfway and it was on Hulu for free. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/09/23 Full Review nefasto r Yes, cinematography and visuals do stands up, but mostly for the lack in the other departments. "Lane 194" is an atmospheric coming of age / drama: 80 minutes of nice, but also very forgettable film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Stunning scenery and cinematography pair with a moving script in this bittersweet coming of age movie. Truly fantastic! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member The world of hippies and communes is supposed to be peace, love, and happiness. Sometimes, however, there's an ugly side, and Lane 1974 explores one young girl's experience. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member The cinematography was stunning in its portrayal of Norcal without being excessively indulgent. Kudos to the editor. The soundtrack and sound design... Wow. Seriously, powerful sense memories of what it's like to clomp around a hippie bus. The acting by the kids was pitch perfect. The only movie I can ground it to is Mac, by John Tutturo. Lane is a really gentle (if that's the right word) personal portrayal of a child's view of a certain time and place. Admittedly a lot less Felliniesque than Mac, and far more grounded in the real, but it has the same sense of "This is a true story. This happened." The drama is relatively understated but real and for that, all the more powerful. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews
