Critics Consensus

Just ordinary. LXG is a great premise ruined by poor execution.

Karen Han Polygon It's big, silly, and entertaining, and even its most naked franchise ambitions feel fun rather than frustrating, because they're so blatant. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Neil Norman London Evening Standard Sadly, the rot sets in just over the halfway mark when the action loses its identity of fustian heroism and degenerates into another arcade video game of mundane destruction. A pity. Jan 11, 2018 Full Review Nell Minow Common Sense Media Enough deaths here for a more restrictive rating. Giovanni C. Plot issues, sure. But what a cast and I love the special effects. The behind the scenes are a great lesson and look back at the process. It’s a fun popcorn movie, especially around Halloween. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/29/25 Full Review Hughe J The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was released in theatres in 2003 and stars Sean Connery and a bunch of other mostly unknown actors in an ensemble cast of literary heroes and villains. We get Allan Quartermain, Captain Nemo, Tom Sawyer, Dorian Gray, Ishmael, a female vampire, Dr. Jekyll, and the Invisible Man. This team is brought together to sail on the famed Nautilus to stop a terrorist organization from starting a war. Naturally many of the group have issues with each other so there's conflict within the group as they fight the baddies to try and save the world. I liked the movie overall but it had a lot of issues with pacing, too many characters, and iffy CGI at times. Plus the acting wasn't that great, except for Connery who was his usual above average self. But I give the film maker's props for the attempt and as I said I liked a lot about the movie. It was a good, not great, early attempt at doing a superhero movie and is worth a watch. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/29/25 Full Review Elyse P Just a fun movie. For a fun time. Don’t think it needs to be taken seriously. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/25 Full Review Logan R Reading through these critiques, I am reminded about just how awful critics are at finding any sort of joy or fun in life and films. This was a genuinely fun movie with some of the coolest fantastical characters in history all in one group. It’s genuinely entertaining. Find joy in life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/21/25 Full Review Edward L This was slated by the comic nerds who supply the audiences for the increasingly rubbish DC and Marvel movies. No one of any intelligence sees comics as literature and this film is exactly what comics should be viewed as: undemanding entertainment that requires little thought from its audience. Essentially a vehicle for Connery who is admirably backed up by his supporting cast. One of the very few decent comic adaptations, Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/17/25 Full Review Jacopo D Meglio evitare, davvero. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/15/25 Full Review Read all reviews
