Critics Consensus

Just ordinary. LXG is a great premise ruined by poor execution.

Karen Han Polygon It's big, silly, and entertaining, and even its most naked franchise ambitions feel fun rather than frustrating, because they're so blatant. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review Neil Norman London Evening Standard Sadly, the rot sets in just over the halfway mark when the action loses its identity of fustian heroism and degenerates into another arcade video game of mundane destruction. A pity. Carson P I remember watching this while I was in 9th grade freshman in high school my father put this on for me to watch i was still getting to know about movies and I quite enjoyed it when I saw it yet I noticed how negatively reviewed this was when it was released and has still not improved it’s critical reception. So I watched it a few more times and noticed some errors with it first of all the movie is not well paced there are scenes that drag on and are also dull like when they walk down a staircase and even that learning how to shoot scene, also the film is also shot poorly though this film came out in 2003 it feels like it was made in 1998 and that’s an issue when a film that came out after 2000 has the imagery and looks of a late 20th century film that’s a problem then we had great blockbusters that were so brilliantly shot they look like they came later like lord of the rings and pirates of the carribean two of my favorite blockbusters. There must have been some issues during the films shooting we have Sean Connery playing Allan quaternary who is working with other charachters like Mina harker, and captain Nemo going on an Indiana jones type adventure to stop James moriarty from bad activity. This was appearently based on a comic book which appearently like avengers casts various book charachters teaming up others including Jekyll and Hyde, along with Dorian gray ( who becomes the villain later on ) mr skinner ( the invisible man ) and Tom Sawyer ( who wasn’t even in the book and forcing him in was kind of off putting ) and they make the villain James moriarty who is the arch nemesis of Sherlock Holmes speaking of which if they had moriarty be the villain why couldn’t they just add in Sherlock Holmes himself as one of the league members then this would have been ten times better. On a premise level this could have been a really good action adventure film in the form of Indiana jones and kings man yet they excecuted it poorly. Many of the scenes feel clunky and awkwardly staged, while I did have fun with the action it at the same time felt inconsistent some of the time and many shots felt ripped off from the matrix still there were some cool scenes including that one with me Hyde fighting that giant heart mutant creatures who he calls him on a bad day a funny line of dialogue that is, at times it also feels that a talented director was behind it. I love Sean Connery he is great as always and he gave a solid performance as the hunter and I’m sad how he died. This was said to be his last feature role and he quit because of how bad it was. There are some cool cinematography that remind me of those classic 70s and 80s films and the sound effects are also stellar but in the end league of extraordinary gentlemen is a wasted potential that could have been better but isn’t the worst movie I have seen and isn’t quite as bad as it’s made out to but I can still see why it got panned and the main reason for why I wouldn’t defend it the way I would defend other unfairly panned action adventure films is because it’s imagery is lifeless thanks to it being shot poorly but it still isn’t the worst movie I have seen there are far worse movies out there but I can’t defend this film as anything sort of a masterpiece it’s a mediocre film at best 4.5/10 Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/09/24 Full Review Liam D Actually not as bad as everyone says it is but for a movie based on a beloved graphic novel with some of the greatest literature characters it’s rather dull Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/08/24 Full Review Jonathan O LXG got great cast but there's no entertainment and the story is not satisfied there's some good moments but is very lacking action movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/17/24 Full Review James D Don’t care like Sean Connery. Wasn’t his best but still better than some movie these days. There will never be another Sean Connery Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review VENTANA E In no way perfect, but compared to recent blockbusters, this movie is very ambitious and unafraid to go places that no other comic books films even try. The source material is better of course, and the hate from his creator really affected the bottom line of the box office, but in a medium like film, this treatment with very intricate visuals, lots of action, crazy concepts, makes it entertaining enough to have a fun watch. Remember this movie came out before a lot of the recent comic book movies we have now, so it was a very bold move to even try it to make it. When I watched as a kid there was definitely nothing like it, maybe the execution could have been a lot better, but damn it, it was extraordinary on it's own way. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Richard P Thoroughly enjoyed this movie Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/14/24 Full Review Read all reviews
