Critics Consensus

Lemon succeeds in its aim as a tart satire, but audiences may find this foray into abrasiveness too sour to swallow.

Marc Savlov Austin Chronicle [Janicza] Bravo and co-writer/spouse [Brett] Gelman have crafted something so intentionally and self-reflexively off-putting that I'm still banging my head against the wall trying to figure out if it's comic gold or just lives up to its title. Rated: 2.5/5 Sep 14, 2017 Full Review Scott Marks San Diego Reader Be prepared for what will prove to be far and away the longest 83 minutes you'll spend watching a movie this year. Rated: 0/5 Aug 25, 2017 Full Review Ben Kenigsberg New York Times It's a case of truth in advertising. Aug 23, 2017 Full Review Rosa Parra Latinx Lens Bravo's depiction of its protagonist challenges social conventions while also displaying certain awkward scenarios. Brilliantly directed and shot that it may overshadow its narrative. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 14, 2021 Full Review David Bax Battleship Pretension Ultimately, Bravo seems to assume we'll sympathize with him for the sole reason that he is the protagonist... Audience Member The humor is a bit off-kilter, but I liked it. It is an interesting observation of a human that is a failure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review sonny p The movie suffers from a boring trajectory and mediocre acting but the script is formidable and regardless of their surroundings Greer and Gelman pull off an awkward and fascinating take on a disgruntled couple. Is it worth a watch? Certainly not. But it leaves you thinking as well as laughing Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/22/22 Full Review Audience Member This is a weird, awkward comedy that's more of a series of skits than a film with an actual plot. Some are quite funny (the seder); all are awkward to the max. There's a large amount of long shots and long takes here, so there's also a real artistry to the film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/27/23 Full Review Audience Member Genre as in Alexander Panye or Tamara Jenkins - this is a weird polemic on loneliness and the middle aged melt down. I believe It is genius and this director's first feature. Incredible. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a refreshingly different movie full of unsympathetic characters who were so sorry that you started to rooting for them and the ending was very close to reality of quiet desperation. I thought it was Wes Anderson meets Todd Solodnz . The pace was off-putting. I had to watch it in sections over a few days but after watching I thought about it quite a bit.
