Dave S Anyone wandering into Let the Sunshine In expecting some sort of American-like kind of romance is going to be bitterly disappointed. Directed and co-written by the French master Claire Denis, it is the sobering and unsettling story of a middle-aged woman (Juliette Binoche) in the middle of a crisis. In need of love, or at least a meaningful embrace, she embarks on a seemingly futile search for a man she can share her life with, all leading to an unusual but surprisingly impactful final scene. Binoche, as always, is flawless and Denis' direction is subtle but impactful. Let the Sunshine in is what good cinema should be – intelligent examinations of interesting characters that leaves a lasting impact. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 04/03/24 Full Review Anca M It is not romantic just very boring. And Binoche so vulgar Rated 2 out of 5 stars 08/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Primeiro filme que assisto de Claire Denis, e faltou conexão, empatia pela personagem perdida nos amores não obtidos, amo Juliette, belíssima, mas não consegui me encantar pelo roteiro, nem pelos personagens, pareciam vazias, numa vã tentativa de profundidade, esbarrando no terreno raso da superficialidade, mas darei mais tentativas, pois sei que me apaixonarei pelas obras de Claire... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/12/23 Full Review Audience Member DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE IT IS A TRAP *contains spoilers* You see the picture of Juliette Binoche looking all carefree and you think something good is going to happen but no, she just messes around with a lot of men and is messed around by a lot of men, nobody learns anything, and then Gerard Depardieu is there at the end for some reason. If this movie was made when Roland Barthes wrote the story, sure, maybe it would have been fresh. But it belongs in the past. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Juliette Binoche shines on the lead role, but Claire Denis' insistence on putting her in tedious relationships overcomes the whole point of the film. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review david f A contemporary romantic drama on a very small scale. It's human and relatable. Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader [Claire Denis's] skill in framing her protagonist's various trysts, moods, and dialogues, sometimes even setting them to music, is matchless. Apr 20, 2020 Full Review David Stratton The Australian Binoche is amazingly good in this role and it's no small thing for a contemporary film to celebrate the sexuality of a middle-aged woman. But Juliette's self-absorption becomes somewhat tiresome after a while. Rated: 3/5 Jan 26, 2019 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald It's a story about people who spend more time talking about their lives than inhabiting them. Rated: 2/5 Jan 23, 2019 Full Review Greg Carlson Vague Visages The presence of Binoche in Let the Sunshine In is a bit of brilliance that taunts and challenges the viewer... Nov 8, 2023 Full Review Vadim Rizov Filmmaker Magazine It’s admirable and eminently sympathetic, and I was exhausted by the end. This is not a bad thing. Jan 10, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review It's a thoughtful, serious, and multilayered film of teary-eyed breakdowns and fleeting bursts of elation.
