Critics Consensus

Life is just thrilling, well-acted, and capably filmed enough to overcome an overall inability to add new wrinkles to the trapped-in-space genre.

J. R. Jones Chicago Reader This sci-fi shocker sticks closely to the Alien playbook, down to the intimately acquainted, flatly characterized crew and the scenes of chaos, panic, and overlapping dialogue. Mar 26, 2020 Full Review Kristen Lopez Culturess It's familiar comfort food for those in need of gory goodness. Nov 20, 2017 Full Review Valerie Complex Affinity Magazine When compared to the cast of Alien, the ISS team isn't well-textured, developed, or likable. Rated: 2/5 Jun 10, 2017 Full Review Noah Berlatsky Everything is Horrible (Substack) Life copies the Alien body, but leaves out the grimy soul May 26, 2025 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia A dull and predictable science-fiction movie. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 5/10 Aug 13, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies I’m sure some of its logic could be picked apart if you’re into that kind of thing, but I enjoyed it as a taut, white-knuckle space thriller that looks great and absolutely nails it’s ending. That’s enough for me. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Read all reviews

Cee A This movie was so bad Im having a hard time coming up with anything good to say. The visuals were okay I guess, nothing spectacular. This is the first time I've seen Ryan Reynolds play something other than the snarky/edgelord character he usually plays. There are a ton of scenes that added nothing to the story and really just felt pointless with the way things progressed. The dialog was hard to understand because the sound design was awful so you will want to watch with subtitles. The characters are shallow and all of them just seem to be kind of blank, they do things but there is no pattern that gives you confidence in them and barely any personality revealed. The few moments that are supposed to endear the characters to the viewer just feel forced and corny. You dont get the feeling that anyone has any clue what they are doing through the whole thing. Add to that the fact that almost every technical detail in the film was just miles away from reality. Yes, I get it, its a scifi horror but the sci in scifi stands for science. Even the alien which is supposed to be this ultimate enemy has no consistency in the writing or behavior it shows, its not motivated by anything other than trying to get the other characters. The ending was also horrible and rushed. I would say dont pay to watch this movie specifically, if its included in whatever streaming service you have then give it a try, but its not worth a rental or purchase on its own. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/09/25 Full Review Geo3 F Most people will say it's a knock off of Alien movies and in some ways it is however to copy a successful franchise you need to do it right and Life did that. What I liked was the different approach of the ending and the how the creature was portray to created a menacing yet mysterious species. What I dont like was how at times it was too easy especially if you seen Alien movies to predict what happens next. However that said it's a good movie for horror/Thriller fans. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/24/25 Full Review Leaburn O Better, more terrifying and intriguing than the Alien films. The only downside was the highly predictable and telegraphed ending. Watched on Netflix. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review tim s Not many horror stories are set in space, but Life takes full advantage of this notion. Reminiscent of The Thing, it follows a lethal alien life form as it slowly makes its way through scientists in complete isolation. Dread and uncertainty take center stage throughout the film, culminating in a shockingly twisted ending you won't see coming. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/22/25 Full Review Gregory S Thought it was pretty good. Turn the brain off a little bit and it’s great. Fun and entertaining movie. Excellent cast as well. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/21/25 Full Review Dean W The astronauts in this movie are way too stupid. They continue to make mistake after mistakes and not take the threat seriously. They all deserve to die. I hope real life astronauts and NASA are not this stupid. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/07/25 Full Review Read all reviews
