Chase W Nov 29 The movie Lightning: Bolts of Destruction is mediocre in its depiction of lightning storms. The opening scene shows lightning striking a gas station and starting a fire. The film explains this storm as a positively charged lightning strom, which is ultra powerful. This is true, charged lightning happens 5% of the times and is powerful. However, positively charged lightning is not necessarily more attracted. The chances of hitting a gas station is already very little. Another example of this is when the lightning hits a lightbulb that then hits a power line. This is very unrealistic and the film tries to dramatize things. Another thing that is bad about the film is the reaction to the storm. The principal of the university believes that Joanna shouldnt warn the town of the weather using a trope of people not taking weather reporting seriously. There is also little to no involvement of any government agency’s doing any work on a storm of the magnitude the film tried to portray. During this time weather reporting and communication was fairly mainstream, so this trope while realistic, is often overused and not fully realistic in real life. In the 2nd and 3rd act of the movie the thunderstorm was threatening the start of an ice age. This is extremely unrealistic because ice ages take 100s of thousands of years to form and they can’t happen instantly. It seemed the events over the film happened within a short time period, which could not happen in real life. Overall, the film uses pseudoscience as a mediocre soap opera plot.
