Abbie Bernstein Assignment X The premise is durable, with high stakes and the ability to vary angels, demons, et al as much as imagination and budget permit. Rated: B- Aug 4, 2020 Full Review James Hanton Starburst With light slices of humour and a well-crafted ending, Limbo exists in the void between something perfectly executed and somewhat unmemorable. Audience Member This movie reminded me a lot of Val (2021), similarly about a criminal whose immortal soul is at stake and is confronted by a demon. The premise is excellent. So is the acting. The script and setting had a film noir feeling: gritty, dark, cynical, at times vulgar. I would not say it was a great film but it addresses an important theological issue that should be of concern to any thinking person: if there is an afterlife, as described in the New Testament, how are we to be judged? This is where I take issue with the movie: it is not theologically correct. The idea of a life review aligns with NDEs and reference to the Book of Life in the Book of Revelation, but the Bible makes it clear that it is God who judges the soul, not a minor demon, as shown in the movie. Moreover, there is no mention of the promise of salvation through Christ; this movie has us believe that salvation or damnation depend on works - which is to the moral value of what a person does or fails to do in life. There is some contention over this: James 2:24 says "You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone" but St. Paul seems to say the opposite: ""Know that a man is not justified by works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ" (Galatians 2:16; also see Rom 3:28 and Eph 2:8-9). The popular TV comedy The Good Place makes the same error, completely side-stepping the question of salvation by grace through faith. However, the movie ends with a twist that obviates the issue. This movie was worth seeing, and at some point I will probably re-watch it. I appreciate movies that tries to address ultimate questions, as this one does, even if I am not fully satisfied with their conclusions. These are open-ended questions that no one can fully answer, so it's enough to try. It's a good effort. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review purrfectly w This was a great concept - a soul, in limbo, on trial by angels to decide if they go to heaven or hell. I love court procedurals etc and most stories that bring a new creative twist on angels/demons or heaven/hell and this strikes the perfect balance for me, blending the two concepts. The cast is perfect, the environment is great and very fitting for the tone set by the characters who work there. I love the demon stenographer and his comedic attitude and casualness. All of the characters - angels, demons of varying degrees and of course, the devil, were great as were the actors portraying them. The story was well written and it even had a decent twist at the end. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/15/24 Full Review Audience Member Simply awesome!! And the chief never appears or what do you think.
