Critics Consensus

Lizzie forces audiences to take a new look at a widely known true-crime story -- even if the well-acted end result is never quite as gripping as it could be.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader [Craig William] Macneill's approach might be described as a so-so impression of art-house understatement, with lots of wide-screen compositions that make obvious use of negative space and a flat tone that might be mistaken for dramatic restraint. Mar 4, 2020 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Takes its title character out of folk history and rewrites her as a queer proto-feminist battling against the worst excesses of patriarchal power. Rated: 4/5 Jan 31, 2019 Full Review Simran Hans Observer (UK) A two-hander with actresses of this calibre should be a humdinger, but very little about this misjudged period drama works properly. Rated: 2/5 Dec 23, 2018 Full Review Bianca Garner Filmotomy Lizzie is a decent film, but it takes a long time to get to the juicy parts. Perhaps this story is best being adapted as a miniseries on so we can spend more time with this fascinating character. Oct 11, 2024 Full Review Nyle Coleman InSession Film Truly what makes the film is the performance from Sevigny and Stewart... Rated: B+ May 9, 2024 Full Review Elsa Fernández-Santos El Pais (Spain) Lizzie doesn't answer all the questions, but gradually gains strength and shape until it transmits to the audience the suffocating oppression, and psychological and physical abuse that abounded in this sick home. Bill T I believe this was the best account of Lizzie Borden. Kristen Stewart was superb Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Graham M It's far from perfect and a bit stagey but it's ok. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review PridePosterStudios Jeremy Kyle would’ve had a field day Rated 1 out of 5 stars 04/26/24 Full Review Lachon J Lizzie is very relatable. Knowing more of the back story helps her cause. From this stand point. Her father and mother had it coming to them. Fantastic movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/24/23 Full Review isla s This is a good period drama - a decent character based drama too. The two main performances are very good - Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart give compelling portrayals. Sevigny's performance is especially great - captivating almost. Its spooky how blank her facial expressions are, given what happens. The story I found intriguing - the fact its based on (I believe) a true story is sobering. I felt frustrated on behalf of Lizzie, trying to find out what her family have planned etc. - men don't treat her too well. The relationship between Lizzie and Bridget is strained and distant initially but they come into their own and it becomes quite a compelling watch. As a part LGBT film this is a very good watch, if a little slow plot wise. I can understand why some may feel its a bit exploitative or controversial being based on a clearly somewhat disturbing true story but most of the film isn't especially graphic. I would warn, however, that the last 20 minutes or so is quite violent (bloody violence and injury detail shown), so it's not for the overly squeamish, unless your ok to look away at key moments towards the end. Yes, I'd recommend this film, especially for fans of the two main actors already mentioned. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Could've been so much better but incredibly boring. Both actresses underutilized as is the lesbian side of this take. Historical drama was never so dull. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews
