Tom Keogh Seattle Times Peng's eye as a director is more pictorial than visually adventurous, but she can underscore the urgent heart of a scene - no matter how busy - with impressive speed. Rated: 3/4 Mar 20, 2015 Full Review Martin Tsai Los Angeles Times Writer-director Peng Sanyuan juxtaposes Lei's and Zeng's parallel searches with a present-day kidnapping in progress, but the clumsy attempt at interconnected stories serves only to confuse. Mar 19, 2015 Full Review Nicolas Rapold New York Times Confronts serious problems but is too busy reaching for epic sweep and soaring moments to nail the fine detail of main characters' fraught give-and-take. Mar 19, 2015 Full Review Joe Bendel Epoch Times Much as he did in Ann Hui's quietly moving A Simple Life, Andy Lau completely lets go of his movie star trappings to give a raw, earthy performance as the guilt-wracked Lei. Rated: 3.5/5 May 20, 2016 Full Review Sherilyn Connelly SF Weekly There's no way to make material like this light or funny, but Lost and Love is particularly bleak. Jan 1, 2016 Full Review James Verniere Boston Herald A unique, uniquely visual, father-son road movie, featuring a marvelous turn by the great Andy Lau. Audience Member Andy Lau's acting so pale, so down to earth, totally acting on the farmer who looking for his lost child. The movie is less tear bomb style than expected. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Literally a road movie happening in China with not much to do with its asserted children kidnapping theme. The relationship depiction between Lei (Andy Lau) & Ceng (Boran Jing), in addition, looks awkward & embarrassing all the way too. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member Lost and Love is indeed a movie full of mixed emotions and surprises, given its heavy theme of child abduction and human trafficking in China. The picture perfect scenery and breathtaking cinematography especially in showcasing the outskirt of China helps in mellowing down the serious subject, making it easier to be accepted by the public. While the approach is refreshing, it tries too hard to cover every aspect of everyone affected from the child abduction from the abductor, abducted child and their family, the new families, friends, volunteers, fellow concerned citizens and netizens and down right to the police. And at the end of the movie, the audience are left craving for more. The biggest mistake that most China production movie made, which Lost and Love fall trapped into as well was cramping all A-listers in the movie in order to guarantee box-office success. While Andy is great as an actor, and the make-up artist and stylist did a great job in making his outlook believable as grassroot farmer looking for his son, his acting fails to portray so. Plus Jing Boran's mundane and monotone, yet at some point annoying acting and not to mention Sandra Ng as and abductor, is by far the joke of the movie. The only saving grace was Tony Leung's cameo appearance as a patrol police which makes audience felt was a perfect fit for it's role. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member ????????????????????????????? ???????????????????? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/23 Full Review Audience Member Addressing a serious issue in China, and what impressed me more was that the director made me cared for the characters in the film. A definitely must-watch film. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member It totally reveal one the facts of Chinese society in 1990s.
