Jennie Kermode Eye for Film The film does an impressive job of bringing us close to its young female protagonists, and never more so than when showing us their appreciation of the absurd. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 20, 2024 Full Review Panos Kotzathanasis Asian Movie Pulse "Love and Pop" is a very interesting film, in a style reminiscent of Sion Sono to many, and definitely deserves a watch, particularly to the viewer that can see the social commentary beyond the perversions and the unusual visual approach. dustin d Love & Pop is a moderately engaging film based on the dubious premise Japanese high school girls engage in prostitution to pursue mindless consumerism. (This was based on unsubstantiated, anecdotal news stories from the '90s.) The experimental filmmaking is interesting at times, but too showoffy at others. Check out the babyfaced Tadanobu Asano. No se requieren grandes presupuestos cuando se tiene clara la anà (C)cdota que se va a narrar... Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member I love the experimental camara moves Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/02/23 Full Review Audience Member Disturbing Japanese movie about the outlawed practice of compensation dating (men that pay schoolgirls for their company). Director Anno uses his cameras in a variety of innovative and unusual techniques and angles. One schoolgirl desperate to buy a ring is about to find out the seedier side of life and go in too deep when she goes on various dates with weird men. Some might find this movie boring but I thought it was quite good and creative. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member This exploration of subsidized dating in Japan is made even more grim by how lighthearted it is on the surface. Just as the name of the movie sounds nice and innocent, so do the characters appear in the beginning, and it is difficult to watch the protagonist get caught in a downward spiral leading all the way to its disturbing but not unexpected conclusion. The cinematography relies on low-budget documentary-style techniques that make the film come across as more raw and realistic, and the acting is so honest that I never once questioned whether these girls could be real people. This kind of realism is daunting, and I felt emotionally invested in the protagonist's highs and lows. It was enough to make me forgive some of the times when the story started to feel a bit incoherent or messy, as well as the occasional slow pacing.
