When 30-year-old self-proclaimed homebody Mack Martin (Elizabeth Lail) reluctantly joins a Palm Springs bachelorette trip for her best friend Carla (Taylour Paige), her inner 70-year-old is released -- literally. The frustrated writer and influencer magically transforms into her future self: "Aunt Rita" (Oscar®-winner Diane Keaton). Freed from the constraints of other people's expectations, Rita comes into her own, becoming an unlikely social media sensation and sparks a tentative romance with Mack's adorable dog-sitter, Jack (Dustin Milligan). A sparkling comedy with a magical twist, Mack & Rita celebrates being true to yourself at any age.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Diane Keaton gives Mack & Rita her all, but this cloying comedy lets her down at nearly every turn.

Audience Says

Mack & Rita is cute and heartwarming to a point -- but it hits that point long before the movie itself is actually over.

Ty Burr Ty Burr's Watch List (Substack) I regret to report that it’s an embarrassment all around, despite the talent involved... Rated: 1.5/4 Aug 15, 2022 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) It doesn't really understand actual old people, and it seems to think that young people don't want to have fun. Aug 12, 2022 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News The outside allure of old age and retirement is not enough to hang the film on, and nothing about its treatment of its characters or its takeaways on social media fame come off as insightful or considered. Rated: D Aug 12, 2022 Full Review Serena Seghedoni Loud and Clear Reviews Occasionally funny scenarios and stereotypical remarks about men (the film barely passes the bechdel test) that paradoxically simplify the themes at Mack & Rita‘s core, making it have less of an impact by the time it reaches its inevitable happy ending. Rated: 3/5 Jul 25, 2023 Full Review Tina Kakadelis Beyond the Cinerama Dome Mack & Rita is a film you’ve seen before. Sure, the plot and the characters are varied slightly, but there’s nothing new or different here. There are six montages in the meager 95-minute runtime, and that alone demonstrates how surface-level the script is Jul 24, 2023 Full Review Matthew Passantino Big Picture Big Sound "Mack & Rita" is the third directorial outing from actress Katie Aselton, who showed a sharp eye for tension with her 2012 thriller "Black Rock," but can't quite give new life to a body swap comedy. Janet S Silly, should have waited to see it at home for free. I've seen more entertaining movies on the Hallmark channel Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/12/22 Full Review Verlyne The most boring movie I've ever seen. The dialogue was embarrassingly bland. We couldn't wait for the movie to end, but we stayed because we wanted to see how this ridiculousness was resolved. Spoiler alert: without any excitement or explanation of the phenomenon. Diane Keaton embarrassed herself with this trite piece of garbage, I went to see it because she was the star she and I should have both stayed home. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 09/15/22 Full Review Gretchen Loved the all-star cast. Good acting, and script. Unfortunately, all too predictable. Especially if you remember the movie BIG with Tom Hanks. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/03/22 Full Review Laura L Very different movie...good storyline Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/30/22 Full Review Carol R It was a fun and hilarious movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/29/22 Full Review SM I thought the entire movie was terrible. I wouldn't even say it's a rental. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 08/29/22 Full Review Read all reviews
