Kevin Maher The Times (UK) Anderson made an aching, yearning three-hour epic about lost souls in LA’s San Fernando Valley, culminating in a nutty, biblical-level frog deluge. Rated: 5/5 May 9, 2025 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times Magnolia is operatic in its ambition, a great, joyous leap into melodrama and coincidence, with ragged emotions, crimes and punishments, deathbed scenes, romantic dreams, generational turmoil and celestial intervention, all scored to insistent music. Rated: 4/4 Jul 15, 2023 Full Review Ann Hornaday Baltimore Sun While not as fully realized as Anderson's last movie, Boogie Nights, Magnolia is filmed with the same skillful abandon, and takes many more artistic risks... The result is a movie as fascinating for its flaws as for its considerable successes. Rated: 3/4 Jul 15, 2023 Full Review Fico Cangiano CineXpress Podcast A fever dream of souls crashing, repentance, forgiveness and second chances. Tom Cruise is phenomenal in what could be Paul Thomas Anderson's best offering. [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 5/5 Mar 28, 2025 Full Review Philip Bagnall Loud and Clear Reviews Magnolia is an extraordinary film about ordinary lives. Sep 19, 2024 Full Review Robert Denerstein Denver Rocky Mountain News Anderson has dared to make a movie that refuses to conceal its excesses, an amazing abundance of strong emotion, technical verve and pure performance power. Mike D Awful. 3 hours of our lives we’ll never get back. Still 25 years later I miss those 3 hours and the so many other things we could have done. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/15/25 Full Review Muvi B An extraordinary film about normal lives Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/14/25 Full Review Angel C Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia is a sprawling emotional epic—bold in scope, unapologetically sincere, and uniquely cinematic. It’s a film that swings for the fences and hits with raw, heartbreaking intensity. Unfolding over one long, stormy day in the San Fernando Valley, Magnolia weaves together the lives of disparate characters, each haunted by regret, longing, and the hope for redemption. The ensemble cast is nothing short of astonishing. Tom Cruise gives a career-defining performance as Frank T.J. Mackey, a toxic self-help guru masking immense pain. Julianne Moore is riveting as a woman unraveling under guilt. Philip Seymour Hoffman brings quiet grace to the role of a compassionate nurse. John C. Reilly’s turn as a lonely, awkward cop adds levity and warmth, while Melora Walters and William H. Macy deliver soul-baring vulnerability. Every actor, no matter how large or small the role, is dialed into Anderson’s rhythm with aching sincerity. What makes Magnolia so special is its emotional ambition. It isn’t afraid to be melodramatic, surreal, or symbolically grand. The infamous rain of frogs, the characters singing along to Aimee Mann’s “Wise Up”—these moments, audacious as they may be, are fully earned by the emotional groundwork laid before them. Anderson pushes the boundaries of storytelling and tone, but always with a deep compassion for his characters. The technical execution is flawless. Robert Elswit’s sweeping cinematography, Jon Brion’s stirring score, and Anderson’s elegant, roving camera build a mood that’s both electric and intimate. Every edit, every transition feels intentional and alive. Magnolia is not a film that hands you easy answers. It asks you to sit with pain, with coincidence, with the messy intersections of past and present. But at its core, it’s a movie about forgiveness—about the possibility of breaking cycles and finding grace, even when it seems far too late. Ambitious, emotionally unguarded, and bursting with life, Magnolia is a rare cinematic symphony—flawed, beautiful, and unforgettable. A true masterpiece of modern American cinema. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/30/25 Full Review MikesReviewsArt n Finally got around to seeing this on T.V. The acting is great all around raw moments unsettling, sorrowful. Messages how we should treat our children how f*cked up people are to them parents are. Peoples piss poor decision-making regret, loss & grief. It’s also about cheating & having loyalty to your spouse. It’s a messed up movie. It’s good, but yeah, messed up. Not really re-watchable. Amongst all the F up things in it at least there is one positive thing towards the end with John c Riley plays a cop ends up with the blonde. What’s up with the frogs? It was so weird the frogs raining. I guess it’s a random act that brings them all together. Overall, yeah, it’s a messed up movie and it’s good and I see why all the movie buffs are talking about this one. Recommended it collection worthy!
