Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com It's not going to be anyone's favorite new horror film this holiday season, but it's a solid enough start to the month when temperatures drop and it becomes cooler to tell ghost stories. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 5, 2018 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com "Malevolent" is based on the novel "Hush" by Konstantopoulos, although you'd never guess that this lightweight ghost story/slasher pic was based on novelistic source material. Rated: TWO STARS Oct 5, 2024 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies Several smart decisions turns it into a surprisingly effective genre movie. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 23, 2022 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut Jackson and his reluctant sister Angela offer a fake ghostbusting service to "cleanse" the homes of gullible Scots. But when Angela starts to see and hear things, is she losing it, or are there really ghosts? And if there are, what could they want? Rated: 4/5 Feb 2, 2021 Full Review Jordy Sirkin Jordy Reviews It While the premise of Malevolent might not be all that different than other general haunted house films, it still pulls you in as a viewer. Rated: 3/5 Jan 2, 2021 Full Review Charles Koplinski Reel Talk with Chuck and Pam A pleasant surprise as this horror film proves to be an uncommonly smart entry in the genre. Joey H I am definitely on the “surprised by the low ratings” train on this one. I thought this movie was great. I think the plot is a good idea and was executed well. The pacing was perfect as we smoothly transitioned from what was happening in Angela and Jackson’s lives prior to the events at the house and into the actual events of the house with a great payoff. Every minute in this movie has reason and nothing feels like filler. The characters and their circumstances were likeable and relatable. Florence Pugh killed her part and showed how much of a star she could be even early in her career and I have no complaints with the acting done by any other members of the cast. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Brad M Not good, way slow and boring. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Gregg W I don’t understand how this movie is not loved by true fans of the horror genre. It’s barely been rated by critics or fans! Florence Pugh shows off her incredible acting skills in an early offering in her career. The supernatural element is deftly used in key moments to keep the viewer unsettled and in a state of fight or flight. All of it comes together with the malevolent main storyline within that house. Measured and well executed - well worth a late night, lights off, popcorn and wine, viewing. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Matthew Y This movie had potential, but was ultimately *bizarely* bad. Specifically, the issue is that it felt like they changed their minds on what kind of movie they were making halfway through. It starts with "there's no real ghosts, we're scamming people." Moves on to "OMG, there are definitely real ghots!" And that is where you expect the horror movie about GHOSTS to start, but instead, the moment it becomes clear that there are ghosts...they run away, are captured by psychopathich humans, and tortured. The ghosts are seemingly forgotten altogether. Then with 5 minutes left, the ghosts pop up again. What on earth HAPPEND to this production? Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review David D Not awful but not good. My biggest peeve is near the end. When faced with 2 threats and you eliminate one, you don't ignore the second threat (who is in the same room) so you can hug and console your sister thereby getting bushwacked from behind. As former military, I would clear a room before I make any secondary assessments. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Pamela G Malevolent is one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in the last year and I watch a lot of them. Florence Pugh is amazing, the movie works because her face is so interesting. Fantastic balance between character/backstory and pure horror (supernatural & torture horror genres combined). Nearly a perfect movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/01/24 Full Review Read all reviews
